Reviews Summary

Cafe Bar Gaucho is lauded for its authentic Navarran pintxos and lively atmosphere, with many highlighting the signature 'huevo trufado' and 'tostada de foie' as must-tries. While the food is consistently praised for its deliciousness and creativity, some diners find it challenging to order due to a lack of visible menus or dish names, and the crowded nature can be overwhelming for tourists seeking a relaxed experience. Nevertheless, it remains a highly recommended culinary destination for its quality and vibrant local scene.

"I have been here several times and it is always very good. They serve a white fish in an awesome marinara sauce. The bread is excellent and you can dip it in the sauce. Their tapas are the best in town and they have a wide variety."

Gregory Venditto

"Famous for its authenticity, fabulous pintxos and great coffee, this place does not disappoint! Friendly vibes from the personnel. Good spots outside (high chairs) to enjoy a tasty bite in the shade."

Hans Yolo

"Amazing food and great vibe where many locals gather. Love the foie gras toast and sea urchin, the octopus is really fresh with a creamy sauce. The cod in tomato salad is also a must try. The food was so good that I forgot to take photos for many dishes. The Rojo beer is an amber beer that goes really well with the dishes. Can also try the Rioja wines for pairing.
It may get crowded later in the evening, best is to go around 6 or 7pm before the crowd gathers."

Old standby restaurants like Gaucho, Rodero and Josetxo serve up extravagant spreads of pinchos like fried octopus and duck liver. Wineries outside of town (called bodegas) let visitors slow-sip their rioja from homemade wineskin pouches called botas. Even dives with tattooed bartenders and dusty New Order records hanging behind the bar display assortments of pinchos that look as dazzlingly colorful as a Joan Miró artwork.

Six of the best: pintxos bars in Pamplona

Alicia, Pruden, Roberto and Mary have presided over Café Bar Gaucho on Plaza del Castillo for over 30 years, practising, what they describe as ‘the cuisine of our land of Navarre, whilst applying little avant-garde nuances along the way’. Locals come here to devour Gaucho’s irresistible foie pintxo, but it’s just one of a host of small plated masterpieces which include Kokotxas de Bacalao, Huevo escalfado y huevas de trucha (cod kokotxas, poached egg and trout roe, which may resemble a rather bulbous looking eyeball but don’t be perturbed, a taste explosion awaits), crispy and sweet spinach and prawns, smoked eel toast, and cream of erizo encased in spiky sea urchin shells with sturgeon and minced pickle, to name but a few – all laid out like an artist’s palette on the bar.
