Reviews Summary

This lively, nautical-themed brewery is a local favorite, celebrated for its exceptional mussels and patatas bravas at affordable prices. While some find the fried squid slightly overdone, the fast service, fun atmosphere, and unique shell-tossing tradition make it a memorable experience for many. It's a bustling, no-frills spot perfect for a quick and cheerful seafood fix.

"portions are definitely bigger than i expected, great sauces i would definitely buy if they had it bottled"

Ayda Ügüt

"You get the vibe this is fast and furious pit stop, something like a kebab shop for seafood. Catering to people looking for a bit of seafood that isn’t fancy but does the job, while you’re drinking lots and throwing the shells in a tray under the bar. The mussels were a little overpowered by the overly fishy creamy sauce and the fried squid felt a little too fried (if that’s even a thing?). Anyway it was cheap and definitely cheerful."

Jit Sandhu

"Great fish style tapas bar, with a very small menu but everything on it tastes incredible and the portions are huge for a very reasonable price - you have to try the mussels and their calamari sandwich!

Also a very fast service :)"

Eating in San Sebastián: Paradise in a Pintxo

We had no shame in succumbing to a guilty pleasure and ordering a few platefuls of mussels at the very popular and very chaotic La Mejillonera: it’s almost like a fast-food joint for eating mussels (mejillones), calamares and sauce-smothered patatas bravas. Highlight in the mussels section goes to the tigres (slightly spicy tomato sauce) and the al vapor (plain), but you’ll find other styles too. Another wildly popular option is the 80-year-old Juantxo Taberna, which specializes in tortilla, either in the form of pintxo or bocadillo (sandwich).

Another one of the best bars in San Sebastian for seafood, La Mejillonera is where you’ll find the best mussels in the city. Try the tigres (“tiger mussels”) with spicy red sauce for an explosion of delicious flavor unlike anything you’ve ever tasted. You’ll probably need to stand due to the amount of people who pack in here, but that just adds to its authentic charm.

Sandra warns us that although this pintxos bar may not look so appetizing from the outside she nonetheless believes it's well worth a stop. La Mejillonera focuses on fresh seafood, so it's important to try calamari with bravas sauce, or mussels in strong tomato sauce. Patatas bravas are also worth ordering..

La Mejillonera (Portu Kalea, 15) With it’s stainless steel counter & backlit picture menu, this place looks like a chippy. Serving predominantly mussel dishes, patatas bravas (with a particularly fiery sauce) & Padrón peppers, I suppose this is San Sebastián’s answer to England’s finest.
