"Didn't mean to eat here but so glad we did. Excellent food, excellent service & a very friendly place. It was busy but we got a table & one of the well dressed staff was soon with us taking our order. The baby squid in sauce was delicious as was the tuna with dressed potatoes & shrimp croquettes."

Howard N Hughes

"Nice 👍 was there on a Thursday night, town full of life and noise as expected. Didn't order a lot but what I did get was good and the beer was fantastic after a long trip to Sanlúcar. It was recommended buy a friend to go so we did go. Thanks for a nice short stop for tapas."

It has the look of a pricey deli – backlit shelves of wine, artfully arranged langoustines – but the football is always on the television, the mood’s relaxed and the drinks are cheap. Like just about every bar in Cádiz, it does food, and it is excellent – try the papas aliñas (potatoes , olive oil, sherry vinegar, parsley and chives). Outdoor tables provide front-row viewing for the evening paseo in cheery Plaza del Cabildo.

My kind of town: Sanlúcar

Slightly less manic is Barbiana (across the square in Calle Ancha), with good house manzanilla, local prawns and patatas aliñadas - potato salad topped with tinned melva (frigate mackerel).

For traditional and cheap I’d recommend Casa Balbino and Barbiana. If you’re looking to check out the gastrobar or modern food scene I’d suggest El Espejo Gastrobar, Trasiego, Taberna Argüeso (also serves sushi on the weekends), Doña Calma Gastrobar, and Restaurante Cargadores de Indias. For seafood you can’t miss Casa Bigote or Mirador de Doñana.

Their specialty is papas aliñas con melva —a traditional tapa containing potatoes, melva (fish that tastes like tuna), onions, olive oil, and parsley. Barbiana offers a simple, traditional menu—I recommend trying ensaladilla, croquetas, and choco frito too.
