Reviews Summary

Bar La Pilareta is celebrated for its authentic Valencian tapas, especially its signature mussels (clochinas). Diners praise the historic ambiance and the quality of fresh ingredients, though some find the service to be casual. While many rave about the unique flavors, a few reviews mention that dishes occasionally lack a punch or can be slightly chewy, and queues can be long.

"La Pilareta is a charming traditional restaurant in Valencia that beautifully captures the essence of Spanish cuisine through its exceptional tapas offerings. The highlight of the menu is undoubtedly the iconic mussels, which are fresh and flavorful, setting the tone for a delightful dining experience. The grilled cuttlefish is a must-try; it's perfectly cooked, tender, and bursting with flavor. The battered squid, or calamari, is another standout, crispy on the outside while maintaining a succulent interior.

To complement the meal, La Pilareta serves a delicious traditional red vermouth, adding a perfect touch to the vibrant atmosphere. Overall, dining here is not just a meal but an immersive experience in Spanish culinary traditions that should not be missed when visiting Valencia."

"Long queue, had to wait for about 1 hour to get my table which was actually promising. I don't mind queuing for great food.

It's ok, nothing mind-blowing. I'm sure their produce is fresh.
Somehow it was lacking overall punch in the flavors.

The sepia was a bit on the chewy side.
The mussels were actually plum and juicy just the soup was very peppery. I guess that is their signature taste. I really wanted to like it. Was just not my taste.

But for sure it was freshly made and served quickly.

The croquettes were creamy and crunchy, golden brown yet lacking flavor. And for sure I couldn't taste the mussels.

The olives were great!

Overall it's ok. By no means is the food bad. Was it worth waiting for 1 hour? No.

Would I eat here for a quick bite? Yes.

The waiter was efficient and worked like a machine but I never saw him smile in the 2 hours I've been there ."

"Easily top 5 meal in Valencia. We ordered the sepionet (grilled cuttlefish fish with parsley garlic oil), Valencia mussels (in a savory and watery broth), patatas bravas (with a dollop of garlic whip) and a glass of vermouth and tinto de Verano. Everything was delicious. I would recommend this same exact meal."

A Foodie’s Guide to Valencia Restaurants

In Valencia’s central El Carmen neighbourhood, picture-perfect Roman and Gothic buildings nuzzle up against colourful street art and sunny terraces. But one of the more traditional bars in the area is La Pilareta, where the mussel shells are still thrown into crates in front of the bar as the staff have done for decades. Better than the mussels, however, were the montaditos: halved, toasted bread rolls topped with grated tomato plus other variations.

Bar La Pilareta is a popular spot in Valencia known for serving clóchinas, a local shellfish delicacy harvested from the waters around Valencia. The season for these tasty bivalves is from the full moon in April through the waning moon in August, and they are grown on rafts just off Valencia’s beaches. Succulent and smaller than mussels, clóchinas have more texture and flavour, and everyone looks forward to the season.

Clóchinas” in Spanish, these mussels are a little smaller than their cousins from Cataluña and the Spanish Atlantic. They are somewhat sweeter than the standard mussel and are only available from May through August and only in the Valencian Community. This is a truly local product – the water in the bay of Valencia is slightly saltier, which provides more nutrition to these delicious creatures grown here in the port.
