There, under its modernist roof, you can have an authentic organic horchata breakfast in Casa Orxata. It's open Monday to Thursday and Sundays from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and on Fridays and Saturdays until 11:30 PM, serving lunch and dinner in addition to breakfast, like the other establishments in the market.

On the beverage side, there are two main drinks you shouldn’t miss: the first, Agua de Valencia, is a cocktail made of Cava (Spanish sparkling wine), orange juice, vodka and gin. Super refreshing and light, I’ve had it at Café Berlin and found it perfect for an easy night-out or a long happy hour. Much more traditional and kid-proof, Horchata de chufa is the real pride of Valencia and if you wander around the streets of the city centre you can still find horchaterías specialising in horchata (indeed) and typical Spanish desserts.

We recommend you the Horchatería Daniel, one of the most traditional temples of this drink located in Alboraya, but if you can't go there, they also have a terrace in the Mercado de Colón and a shop in San Vicente Mártir street, the tigernut milk to take away is very common for Valencian snacks. Other alternatives are Bertal, which has shops in Plaza de la Reina, San Vicente and Calle Bilbao; the classic Horchatería Santa Catalina; and the Mon Orxata trolleys, which you will find in the most emblematic places in the city.

A recently restored early 20th Century Modernist building, this beautiful marketplace is a lovely place to take a mid-morning break and have a Cappuccino de Verano – a real treat. After you’ve finished on Colón, head out through the back door of El Corte Inglés into La Plaza de Alfonso el Magnánimo, a lovely leafy square with the most fascinating trees in Valencia. Mercado de Colon, Calle Jorge Juan 19: Located in the high-end El Ensanche neighborhood, which has some very upscale stores, this market was built in 1914 by Francisco de Mora a contemporary of Gaudi. Early 19th century Valencia bequeathed the city a wealth of modernist-inspired buildings. One of the most iconic is the Mercado de Colon, built by Francisco Mora Berenguer (1875-1961). Mora studied at Barcelona’s top school of architecture and had direct contact with key players in the Catalan modernist movement, such as Antoni Gaudi.

The tour started just down the street from my apartment at Mercado de Colón. Unlike the Central Market, which boasts an enormous variety of groceries and fresh seafood, Mercado de Colón is more of a collection of cafes, bars and restaurants. It has become my go-to hangout spot, especially when craving a horchata de chufa.

Another market that needs to be on your Valencia bucket list is Mercat de Colón​. Established in 1914 by Francisco Mora Berenguer, this emblematic modernist building is set in the heart of the city. There, you´ll be greeted by tall columns reaching the roof, and archways with clear glass windows.

It’s a Modernista market with impressive iron columns and red brick facades inaugurated in 1916. Initially, it hosted a fresh produce market of which only a few stalls remain. This market is located in the Eixample district, an affluent area that boasts some of the best shopping in Valencia.

Direct your spree around Calle Caballeros, Carrer de Baix, Carrer de Calatrava and Calle de la Sombreria, which is just around the corner from La Estrecha – the narrowest building in Europe at just 107cm wide. There’s a cute little tavern attached, where you can cool off with a cerveza.
