Reviews Summary

Bodegas Almau is lauded for its authentic, old-world charm and unique tapas, particularly its inventive anchovy creations. Diners praise the affordability and the extensive wine selection, with many highlighting the pleasant terrace ambiance. While the language barrier is sometimes mentioned, the welcoming staff and delicious food ensure a memorable experience.

"Where to even start. How
About with the vermú de la casa. Made on site and you can get it to go too! (Takeaway for you non-gringos). Anchovy pintxos were all awesome and the other tapas were great too. I loved the oldness of this bodega. Prices were amazingly good. Once they realized I speak Spanish all was even better. It’s a must-do in Zaragoza."

Michael Spears

"The vibe is great! We had a seat outside near the garden and it was a pleasant afternoon. The camarero is attentive and quick.

Dulce de anchovy was delicious!! The minchito was great too!

4 dishes + 2 glasses of wine = 15,50€"

Sheena Pimentel

"Bodegas Almau serves what sounds like a culinary dare: anchovies with chocolate. At first glance, it feels like a match made in hell—salty fish and sweet cocoa? Surely a joke. But one bite rewires your brain. The briny punch of the anchovies collides with the silky bitterness of the chocolate, and somehow, against all logic, it’s perfect."

Zaragoza is like San Sebastián before it was ruined by loud Americans

Each spot has a must-order dish and I kicked off with earthy mushroom croquetas at Taberna Doña Casta, before crossing the road to Bodegas Almau, a wine-bottle lined bar which specialises in various anchovy preparations. After a bit of a back and forth, I was persuaded to try their award-winning signature tapa of a slice of toast spread thickly with cream cheese and topped with an anchovy fillet, honey and dark chocolate shavings. Much to my surprise it proved a salty, sweet delight.

El Tubo, the soul of Zaragoza

Some of the most classic ones are specialists in one kind of tapa that they have been preparing for a very long time, like El Champi which serves grilled mushrooms on bread, Bodegas Almau for “anchoas en salmuera”, Lamaribel Escabechado for marinade tapas, Taberna Doña Casta with its “croquetas” and “huevos rotos” or “El Musti”, nickname of Bar Fenicia, which makes awesome “empanadillas” with its libanese influence. Into the new generation ones we have Uasabi, El Meli del Tubo or 7 Golpes.

The big weekend: Zaragoza

Back to El Tubo to start at Bodegas Almau (Calle Estebanes 10), which has been serving punchy Aragonese reds since 1870, or Los Victorinos (Calle Jose de la Hera 6), where a montadito (open sandwich) of jamon, foie and boletus costs £2.40. Everything stays open late, so if you want to catch a concert at the highbrow Auditorio de Zaragoza (tickets from £12; auditoriozaragoza.com) or the down-and-dirty Casa del Loco (from £8; Calle Mayor 10), rock on.

A weekend in . . . Zaragoza, Spain

All the guidebooks recommend Bodegas Almau (Calle Estebanes 10), which has a beautiful tiled exterior and wine-laden shelves. It’s rammed with businessmen, though, so I walk 20 yards to El Champi (Libertad 16), where I hoover up its one and only tapa: four mushrooms in a garlicky sauce on bread, served with a glass of wine for €3.35 (£2.85). It’s incredibly moreish.
