For brunch, Café Kumbuk on Independence Avenue offers a contemporary riff on local, seasonal produce with multiple vegan and vegetarian options. The Black Cat Café in Colombo 07 has no black cats, only cosy nooks to sit in, an easy ambience, good coffee and food. For lunch, head to VOC Café at the Dutch Burgher Union, known for its lamprais.

The decor is comfy and casual, making it easy for digital nomads to spend a few hours here. Most food is prepared with organic products and the menu is changed according to the seasons. You will never bore of Cafe Kumbuk.

Sharing a colonnaded building with Prana Lounge yoga studio, Kumbuk is popular with Colombo's expat Lululemon set. Named after the smooth grey-barked tree that graces Colombo's uneven streets is Cafe Kumbuk, tucked down a cul-de-sac and filled with photographs of the Sri Lanka of yesteryear. Sourcing their coffee beans from Temple Grounds, Cafe Kumbuk is known for good brews, all of which arrive with one of the cafe's homemade pale green pol toffees (coconut toffee) on the side. When peckish, the kithul glazed pol sambol toast and turmeric battered Lankan fish 'n’ chips are worth an order, although the portions can be a little on the small side.

Kumbuk cafe was the first of a kind in Colombo, the first to combine tropical vibes with poached eggs on avo toast and good coffee — everything that other cafes are trying to replicate now: some successfully, others less so. When in Sri Lanka, my first preference is always cafes that, architecturally speaking, let the inside and outside spaces morph into one, a concept beloved by Geoffrey Bawa, renowned Sri Lankan architect. I will always choose a garden cafe over an inclosed, air-conditioned space.

Attracting a steady stream of friends catching up over tropical hotcakes, Kumbuk is notable for its bohemian vibe and leafy interior – ideal for lounging with a laptop or one of these brilliant books. Devour a prawn wrap, sip a terrific tropical smoothie or enjoy a naked burrito bowl whilst nattering away at the big communal table or flopping on the sofa. This laid-back hangout prides itself on using local, seasonal ingredients – organic where possible – and focusing on sustainability.

Cafe Kumbuk used to be down Horton Place and was pretty much everyone's go-to spot when they go looking for a meal that ticks every box of being pretty, healthy and a tad more aesthetic than what we're used to. Now they are at Thambiah Avenue, and still maintains that name for being one of the few places in Colombo that serves food that's healthy and all in all fantastic even if you have to pay a bit more than what you're used to.

With a menu that adapts to what’s available in season using fresh local produce and organic ingredients, Café Kumbuk delivers healthy and delicious food in a no-fuss menu. Located in a restored old bungalow in a residential neighbourhood, with a variety of music to choose from, the Café offers a homely laid-back environment and adjacent yoga studio. A refreshing surprise is often achieved through seasonal pop-ups.

If you fancy having breakfast whilst surrounded by nature, then head to Café Kumbuk. Named after a local tree species, the Kumbuk tree, the café’s highlight is its natural surroundings, with abundant foliage in every corner you look. The space is quite intimate, seating only 30 patrons at a time, so make sure to go early and order their healthy and organic dishes made from local ingredients.

I only had 24 hours in Colombo and made a beeline for Cafe Kumbuk, in the Cinnamon Gardens neighbourhood. I'd saved it in my Google Map but it was also recommended by Temple Grounds (see below), a roaster whose coffee I'd discovered earlier on my trip. Cafe Kumbuk is a lovely, colourful cafe with seating available both indoors and in the small courtyard garden.

They’ve been around for a while and this garden cafe is a peaceful place to go to right in the middle of the city, and it’s made even better all thanks to the tummy-rumbling food and drink they have to offer. It’s also an ideal spot if you have any sort of dietary preferences as they have dishes with homemade plant-based “meat”, dairy alternates and more.

Cafe Kumbuk is so good, it’s almost like one of those secret spots you want to keep from the rest of the world. It’s a charming sustainable cafe (and a sister cafe to Nine Plus Four) with a menu full of organic goodies.

The Seed Cafe’s sister cafe The Grind as well as Black Cat Cafe and Stay serve a mean cup of coffee alongside some great open toast brekky options but we’d also recommend you try out Cafe Kumbuk if you’ve got the time.

My top choices from the breakfast side of their menu are the Minty Avo Smash, Pesto Eggs and the House Granola!. Kumbuk also serves up superb tunes and good vibes galore!
