Who doesn’t know this very famous cafe in Colombo @cafekumbuk Usually, when you come to Colombo, you should definitely try this cafe. Located on Independence Avenue, this cafe combines artistic and minimalist concepts. I visited café kumbuk for the second time and to be honest it is still one of the good cafes in colombo, the ambience is cozy, the food is delicious and the service is friendly....

@Cafe Kumbuk was honestly such a calm and lovely experience! I managed to stay well under my 3K budget but keep in mind, budgets can vary depending on what you like. That said. I did notice their vegan options are a lot more affordable than the meat dishes Ps. I know majority on my channel said 3.5k is the best budget for a solo date but I shot the video saying 3k so I had to stick to 3k next time...

Reviews Summary

Cafe Kumbuk is a beloved spot praised for its cozy ambiance, friendly service, and a menu brimming with fresh, healthy, and creative options, including many vegan choices. Diners particularly rave about their delicious food, from brunch items to desserts like the key lime pie. While most experiences are overwhelmingly positive, a minor note on potential insects in the outdoor seating area was mentioned.

"We had a lovely time at Café Kumbuk in Colombo, it’s such a charming and cozy spot, perfect for relaxing and enjoying wholesome, fresh food. The vibe is calm and welcoming, with a beautiful, earthy interior that makes you feel at home.

The menu is full of healthy, creative options, and everything we tried was delicious and thoughtfully prepared. From the drinks to the mains, you can really taste the freshness in every bite.

It’s a great place to unwind, meet friends, or even spend some quiet time on your own. We truly enjoyed our visit and would definitely love to go back again!"

"I had a lovely experience at this Cafe Kumbuk! The ambiance was cozy and welcoming, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy our time. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, offering excellent service with a genuine smile. Special thanks to Harith who gave me a good recommendation for the food.10 out if 10 ✨The food and drinks were fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. I especially loved their Iced Coffee! Absolutely delicious!"

Asha Indunil

"If you’re looking for a cozy little escape from the city’s hustle, this café is the perfect spot. Tucked away in the middle of Colombo, it blends comfort and nature beautifully while serving up food that truly delights. Since the day they opened, they’ve stayed true to their concept and branding, which I really admire.

The menu has something for everyone, including vegans, and the variety is impressive. The staff is friendly, service is good, and the food is consistently tasty. From their current menu, I have to say the mango pancakes are an absolute favorite of mine — highly recommended!

It’s definitely a place I’d love to visit again and again. One small suggestion for the management: the outdoor seating area tends to attract a few mosquitoes and flies. Maybe adding some bug-repellent plants could help make it even more enjoyable. Other than that, everything is spot on."

Colombo, Sri Lanka places to eat: Six of the best cafes

Sharing a colonnaded building with Prana Lounge yoga studio, Kumbuk is popular with Colombo's expat Lululemon set. It's light and airy with white walls, high ceilings, plants galore and communal wooden tables, and the menu is a wholefood song sheet of local, seasonal and organic dishes (vegans welcome); even the coffee is locally grown and roasted. When it's too hot for coffee, or tea, there are iced options such as the Kumbuk Colada, a fruit smoothie made with coconut milk, coconut ice-cream, sea salt and toasted coconut flakes, served with a sustainable stainless-steel straw.

The best cafes in Colombo

Named after the smooth grey-barked tree that graces Colombo's uneven streets is Cafe Kumbuk, tucked down a cul-de-sac and filled with photographs of the Sri Lanka of yesteryear. Sourcing their coffee beans from Temple Grounds, Cafe Kumbuk is known for good brews, all of which arrive with one of the cafe's homemade pale green pol toffees (coconut toffee) on the side. When peckish, the kithul glazed pol sambol toast and turmeric battered Lankan fish 'n’ chips are worth an order, although the portions can be a little on the small side.

The 18 Best Restaurants in Colombo

Kumbuk cafe was the first of a kind in Colombo, the first to combine tropical vibes with poached eggs on avo toast and good coffee — everything that other cafes are trying to replicate now: some successfully, others less so. When in Sri Lanka, my first preference is always cafes that, architecturally speaking, let the inside and outside spaces morph into one, a concept beloved by Geoffrey Bawa, renowned Sri Lankan architect. I will always choose a garden cafe over an inclosed, air-conditioned space.
