Reviews Summary

Upali's by Nawaloka is highly praised for its authentic and delicious Sri Lankan cuisine, with many reviewers highlighting the flavorful rice and curry and traditional desserts. The ambiance is described as warm and inviting, reminiscent of a homey setting. However, some diners have noted inconsistencies in service, with occasional long waiting times or inattentive staff.

"I, absolutely love coming here, exceptional food every time.
Before I start, the service does not match the quality of the taste and the food. Don’t get me wrong, the wait staff are great, there is not enough of them, and the customers end up waiting a long time.
I love having the traditional rice and curry, and it is so good. The next trip I had the hoppers, and wow. Can’t beat that.
We also shared some kitty roti and the dry beef curry, all exceptional.
The watalappam was excellent and so was the caramel pudding.
The restaurant is very clean and really worth the trip."

"One of the popular Sri Lankan cuisine restaurants in Colombo, this place is favored by both locals and tourists, making it a trending spot. It is easily accessible from the main road, and parking is always available. The food is delicious, with each dish served as a single portion, making it perfect for sharing among kids. You can customize the spices to suit your preference. My favorites are the mutton kottu and prawn curry with roasted bread. All the ingredients are fresh, and the staff is friendly and helpful. Typically, there is no waiting time, which adds to the convenience. I highly recommend it for dinner, as the restaurant has a lovely atmosphere."

Eranga Tennakoon

"I tried the Sri Lankan mixed flavors platter and one of their desserts (photos attached). Both were delicious! The waiter was very kind, friendly, and attentive — he even gave us information while chatting with us. One small note: if you don’t want spicy food, make sure to mention it in advance. Overall, it’s definitely a place where you can comfortably enjoy a meal if you’re around. Highly recommended!"

Best places for authentic local food in Colombo

While most hotel buffets and eateries across Colombo will offer this staple meal, we find Upali’s by Nawaloka a front-runner, celebrated for its homely recipes and simplicity and is an excellent ambassador for quality local rice and curry as well as most other local cuisine like hoppers, string hoppers, rotis, and kottu. The Palmyrah at Renuka City Hotel is a close counterpart with the addition of a Jaffna-twist and offers good quality service. Nuga Gama at the Cinnamon Grand, albeit at five-star prices, offers not just local cuisine but village fare in an ambiance that would transport you deep into rural Sri Lanka.
