We were recommended by our Hotel to pay a visit to this restaurant, for an authentic touch to the local Sri Lankan community and its food culture…Situated at the Galle Fort, is located this restaurant, with a little difficulty in locating this place and you will have to keep asking the local people on ur walk through the way…The food options make up big time for all the time you spend locating this place.. Offered with a huge varieties for amazing Rice and Curry experience (specializing in Srilankan Cuisine), this place is operated and owned by a local ancient family of Srilanka. The topping is its placement right in between the garden, and is surrounded by green flora everywhere in the ancient set up of the house.

Under Dutch rule, about 500 families lived here and you could find public buildings, administration centers, military facilities, warehouses and churches within the walls. The fort as you can see it today features well-preserved colonial architecture (of course heavily influenced by the Portugese and the Dutch who built the town in the style of their homeland) and cobblestone streets in a grid-layout and has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Go with a big appetite to the Lucky Fort Restaurant (average cost, ₹1000 for two) located in a quiet lane down the busy Pedlar Street. This no-fuss, family-run eatery has a set menu of rice and ten types of curries that change depending on what is available in the market. If you want a taste of the local food with a view, go to Seagreen Guesthouse (average cost, ₹1600 for two) and ask for a table on the first-floor balcony.

Don’t be fooled by its size or the small number of tables, as their portions are big enough to share. Going bit further from 3-4 curries and rice, Lucky fort Restaurant serves 10 curries with rice including range of vegetables and meat items. And prices are considerably lower making it a perfect spot for anyone on a budget or anyone who’s out searching for a place for good local cuisine.

For an authentic homemade Sri Lankan curry, head to Lucky Fort Restaurant. A tiny family-run eatery set on Parawa street, this secluded restaurant serves an incredible range of local curries in huge portions adapted to suit Western tastes. One set menu is more than enough for two people, especially if you’re also planning to sample some local desserts later.

Lucky Fort Restaurant in a small side street does the very best locally made vegetarian rice and curry. Get there early and don’t eat beforehand as typically, you’ll be served 10 dishes including aubergine, garlic, cashew nut, gotakola (a local vegetable), bean, carrot and devilled potato, all served with a mango chutney and as-much-as-you-can-eat rice.

We ate our fair share during the trip, and while himself swears by a curry we had in Ella, Lucky Fort’s offering stole the show for me. Hands down, this was my favourite curry of the entire trip.

The Lucky Fort Restaurant is a busy family-owned business and located just by the road. It has a simple exterior, surrounded by walls and a yard full of plants and colorful lights, which makes for a great atmosphere.

For affordable (but incredibly delicious) Sri Lankan food, The Blockhouse and Lucky Fort Restaurant are highly recommended. Do check out Barefoot for chic homewares and Stick No Bills for artsy postcards too.

This restaurant is really affordable and serves some of the best Sri Lankan food in Galle. Hence, I would highly recommend a visit to this restaurant.

Just outside the fort, Unawatuna’s small-group sessions ($35) shine with their intimate, casual approach to traditional rice and curry dishes.
