For an impressive fika (the Swedish word for coffee and a chat), head south from St Peter’s (taking a detour via Lilla Torg) to reach Lilla Kafferosteriet. The coffee roastery based in Claus Mortensen’s house – a 17th-century townhouse belonging to the Reformation-era priest – serves baked goods from fika heavyweights like Olof Viktors, St Jakobs Stenugns Bakery, Patisserie Katarina, Joel Lindqvist and Madame Marzipan, alongside its superior coffee.

Appealing to a 30-something and older crowd, Victors does glam cocktails on Lilla Torg with light late-night snacks available to accompany your tipple.

Lilla Kafferosteriet is not only Malmö's oldest micro-roastery, it's also the perfect café for true coffee aficionados or anyone who wants to get in on the hype. During the spring and autumn, Lilla Kafferosteriet organises coffee tastings where you can learn more about the origin of coffee beans, different varieties and processes. LILLA KAFFEROSTERIET is my favorite place in the city for a nice coffee (I am addicted to yellow pea milk now!) and a kanelbullar (cinnamon bun) or other pastry for fika which, summed up, is the traditional Swedish afternoon break. They have a lovely outside area to just bask in the sun away from the hustle and bustle of the busy street. Their vintage chic interior is so wholesome and many vegans like to stop by to grab a breakfast sandwich here too.

The oldest café in Malmö is still one of the most popular for a reason. Owner Filip Åkerblom set up Sweden’s first micro-roastery back in 2016, and Lilla Kafferosteriet is where the latest roasts are showcased. Sitting just off Malmö’s main square, Lilla Torg, the 16th century building houses a warren of rooms spanning two floors.

Lilla Kafferosteriet is in a beautiful 17th century building in the middle of Malmö. They serve hyper-modern coffee of all flavours for all tastes. All coffee is pre-roasted in a small cast iron roast (image above from their roastery) to get an even temperature, then hand-packed before served and sold.

You can’t miss this iconic yellow coffee shop during your stay in Malmö… literally. It’s right smack dab in the city center. There is loads of space here both indoors and out making it a great space to gather for a fika with friends or to get some work done.

Try Kao’s, which specialises in meat-free meals, or Lilla Kafferosteriet, which does classic Swedish snacks as well as budget-friendly breakfasts. Another safe bet is Noir, where you can grab delicious cakes, strong coffee and healthy open sandwiches.

The scent that meets you when you open the green wooden doors, is seducing. The reason for this might be that there has been a coffee roastery here before. In 2006 there was almost only Espresso House to visit for people in Malmö who wanted fika.

It’s easily forgotten that you’re in the city center while you sit down in the garden for a Swedish ‘fika’. Try some of the home-roasted coffee. Fun fact: Filip, owner at Lilla Kafferosteriet has written the world cup rules for coffee roasting.

Lilla Kafferosteriet is an adorable place in Gamla Stan, the old town of Malmö. The narrowest green door leads into a coffee, cake and sandwich heaven. In the summer they have a lovely outdoor patio full of trees in the back.

This central cafe has great coffee and an assortment of cakes and pastries. In the warmer months, head outside to the backyard terrace. It is the the perfect spot to soak in the afternoon sun.

Lilla Kafferosteriet is great for lunch, loved their open sandwiches, and breakfast, but also excellent Fika. Their buns are very good. It’s central location is incredibly handy.

Anyway I tried out two places, Koco Coffee & Tea Atelier and Lilla Kafferosteriet. Both excellent for different reasons, with one uniting factor: fucking good coffee.

If you’re traveling on your own, engage in some socializing and ask locals what their ideas are for having a traditional Swedish fika with family or friends.

Lilla Kafferosteriet is most popular around 2 PM on Saturdays. Visitors usually stay up to 1 hour here. It's most quiet on Wednesdays.
