Söderberg & Sara

Based in the Västra Sorgenfri area of Malmö, Söderberg & Sara is located next to St. Pauli kyrkogård – an excellent spot to walk off too many sweet treats. It follows a similar ethos to many of the ‘New Nordic’ restaurants found in Malmö, as the bakery uses organic flour, local producers and even grows some fresh ingredients at its own farm. Per and Tilde, the team behind Söderberg & Sara, have created a menu of sourdough breads, cardamom buns and more, but you’ll also find wood-fired pizza.

Scandinavians know how to do a good café and there are plenty of contenders for the title of best place to grab a Macchiato in Malmö. However, if you are pressed for time, I would recommend that you head to the St.Knut area of town which has a lovely village-y feel and three sublime cafes – No.6, Söderberg & Sara, and Spoonery. I came away from No.6 wanting to go home and triple the number of pendant lights hanging in my kitchen as their collection of vintage lighting looks so effective grouped above the coffee bar.

An Ystad institution with a branch in Malmö in the S:t Knut district. Both an artisanal bakery and a coffee roastery, this is a cafe that serves its peoples needs, from a wide selection of local products to two different daily filter coffees on demand. There’s also an unbelievable line-up of freshly-baked goods, from sourdough boules, buns and loaves to the most buttery, flaky and sweet pastries, though not least kanelbullar and kardamumbullar but also pastéis de nata and kouign amann.

We then went to St. Knuts Torg, another hotspot with several cafes/restaurants that I had on the list, including Mineral, Uggla coffee bar and Söderberg & Sara. But since we were absolutely full, we didn‘t try any of the 3, but went to the cute zero waste store GRAM for a snack. Especially Mineral must be very great, unfortunately it was closed Sun/Mon, so we had no opportunity to eat there.

This trendy artisan bakery is just around the corner from Cafe No. 6, so if you were wanting to buy a selection of breads or pastries to take home with you or for a picnic in the park, you haven’t far to travel!. Söderberg & Sara pride themselves on using local produce and everything is made with natural yeast in their delightfully welcoming bakery.

The tasty breakfast menu at sourdough bakery Söderberg & Sara is another non-buffet option. Refuel with their delicious filter coffee (free refills included, as is common in Sweden) or head off for a post-breakfast coffee at Kaffebaren på Möllan. The coffee bar is the best place to people watch and soak up the Malmö vibe.

There’s also a fantastic bakery called Söderberg & Sara Bageri where you can get a mean loaf of sourdough. The very aesthetically pleasing and environmentally (and customer) friendly floral shop Florera. Super cute and totally up my alley vintage store and macrame heaven Butik Fabrik.

Malmö is so lucky - the best bakery in Ystad has decided to open a branch here, next to S:t Knuts Torg. After five years Tilde and Per felt they could produce and bake more in their gigant stone oven. And the natural choice was of course to expand to Malmö.

Always full of customers, this cozy neighborhood bakery is a local favorite and we can taste why. Kanelbullar are stellar here and so is the coffee and together they make for a perfect spot to have a conversation with a friend.

You’ve probably heard of “fika”, which is the deep-rooted Swedish tradition of having a coffee break with (often) a sweet treat. Söderberg & Sara, located in the St:Knut district, is a great place to enjoy a fika break.

This is the perfect place for the health conscious, with delicious vegan porridge. Söderberg and Sara is also great for those who want sweets!. If you’ve ever tried Pastel de Nata, then this is the place for you.

They make a really fantastic loaf of sourdough, and you can sit in their cafe and have bread and cheese with a cup of coffee in the morning, just like the locals do. Left: St. Jakob’s; Right: Söderberg & Sara

Söderberg & Sara is in the area of the Mitt mollan and Far i hatten and in my humble opinion this place offers the best Kanelbullar sharing that first place with St. Jakobs Stenugsbageri.

Some of our favourites were from Söderberg & Sara in the St Knut area of the city and on the other side of town the cardamon infused buns from Bagaren & Bonden were out of this world.

Söderberg & Sara, whose sister restaurants are featured in the Italian and Pizza section of this guide, specializes in all things baked goods. This includes delicious semla!
