Still in the same location as when it opened in 1897, "The Prince" serves both traditional and modern Swedish cuisine, but it's the traditional that brings most people here. The restaurant is rightly known for its shrimp salad, hand-rolled meatballs, and Wallenbergare, a classic dish of veal, cream, and peas. The interior is rich with mellow, warm lighting, dark-wood paneling, and leather chairs and booths.

With a history that dates back over 100 years, Prinsen is an established fine-dining restaurant in Stockholm and has been a firm favorite of the city’s elite since its foundation. Despite its illustrious reputation, Prinsen is unpretentious and instead strives to welcome everyone through its doors to celebrate and enjoy excellent food with loved ones. With its wood-paneled walls, antique-style floor tiling and brass accents, Prinsen resembles a brasserie in the great French tradition.

Located just across the road from Café Riche (where the local youngsters and hipsters go to be seen), Prinsen is a welcome sanctuary from this glitzy part of town. Step inside and it feels like another world: with its light wood panelling, mirrors, tiled floor and white tablecloths, and the staff attired in white jackets with epaulettes, it is reminiscent of the grand cafes of Mitteleurope. You could almost be in Vienna, Budapest or Berlin, supping with Bohemians.

Prinsen, originally Café du Prince, opened as a beer hall in 1897. Today, it’s one of the oldest restaurants in Stockholm that has remained open at the same address. Prinsen went through an extensive renovation in the early 1900s, and the interiors still carry the feel of a turn-of-the-century restaurant with its art-filled wood panels, large mirrors and intimate alcoves.

Prinsen has been serving classic Swedish dishes to hungry Stockholmers since 1897. The restaurant has retained its original decor, with art-covered walls, wooden panels and impressively high ceilings. They are passionate about preserving Swedish culinary history and the menu includes iconic dishes such as meatballs, Wallenbergare veal patties and Beef Rydberg.

Restaurang Prinsen is another Swedish meatball purveyor with a lot of history. Since opening in 1897, "Books have been born here. Love has been born here. Artists have created their works here" according to the restaurant's own introduction. There's certainly something in the air, with its classic decor and art-filled walls oozing atmosphere.

If you’re looking for a classic restaurant, Prinsen is a great choice and one I visited and loved first hand!. A wood-paneled interior with bright chandeliers lighting up the restaurant plus street side dining (where we dined). Classic Swedish cuisine is done spectacularly since it’s one of the Best Stockholm Restaurants.

Prinsen (1897) – Several storied restaurants opened in 1897, partly due to the Stockholm World's Fair being held in Djurgården between May and October. Prinsen was founded as Café du Prince but was almost instantly called Prinsen by the locals, which also became the restaurant's official name in 1905.

Outside of the old town you might like to try Ekstedt or Restaurang Prinsen. If you’re better organised than me, there are a lot of Michelin-starred restaurants to try to book. At the other end of the spectrum, I loved a pillowy, juicy elk flatbread from a stall at Skansen.
