This massive restaurant with two huge bars is a complete social, architectural, and dining experience that surrounds you with wood paneling, leather chairs and sofas, and distinctive lighting fixtures. In the elegant dining room, fine Swedish cuisine is served, but the scene is as much social as culinary. There's a bar directly facing Stureplan, where you can sit on a summer night and watch Stockholmers gather at the nearby Svampen (the mushroom-like concrete structure that has been the city's meeting point for years).

A Stockholm institution with a culinary history that spans over 100 years resides in Stureplan a public square in Stockholm. The classic brasserie with white linen tablecloths and uniformed waiters serves French bistro classics and a few Swedish ones, but seafood and shellfish is their speciality. Sturehof is the place to be seen for late-night drinking, we enjoyed an early dinner and feasted on grilled bread with creamed chanterelles and poached lightly salted cod with prawns, horseradish, poached egg and browned butter hollandaise.

Opened in 1897, this brasserie is an institution amongst Stockholm foodies. The warren of dining rooms vary in décor, including a library-themed room upstairs, but there’s an unstuffy sophisticated feel throughout. The restaurant works with local fishermen to encourage sustainable fishing practices, and highlights of the seafood-focused menu include fish gratin topped with creamy pommes duchesse swirls and Våsterbotten cheese, and grilled turbot head with shoestring fries and bearnaise sauce.

Keep straight ahead and you will make it to (8) Svampen (The Mushroom) which is one of the preferred meeting points for Stockholmers in the area known as Stureplan. Take a look around you and feel the ambient. You have stepped into Östermalm, one of the poshest neighborhoods in Stockholm. Walk to the left and turn right on the first street Humlegårdsgatan which will take you directly to our next stop (9) Östermalms saluhall, the old food market located in an historical building.

We enjoyed a fancy weekend seafood brunch here in the enclosed heated patio, watching the bustle of the square outside on a cold winter day. They make different pickled herring dishes here- you can get a sampler platter to try a few flavors (our favorite was the gin and juniper). Fried mackerel croquettes and oysters rounded out our light meal, but they do have plenty of full-on entree options as well.
