Located near to Bern’s BarenPark, or Bear Park, which opened in 2009, Altes Tramdepot is a site of gastronomic and natural interest. The Altes Tramdepot serves some of the best beer in the city. The Bavarian-style beers are brewed on site next to the famous BärenPark (bear park). Unlike most places in Berne, the Tramdepot is open on Sundays.

From the famous bearpark, where Bern’s resident brown bears Finn, Björk and Ursina live in a natural enclosure covering 6,000 square metres, it’s just a few steps to the Altes Tramdepot, a restaurant and brewery all in one. Ranging from light and Märzen to wheat varieties, an impressive over 3,000 hectolitres of beer are brewed here every year, as evidenced by the huge copper brewing kettles in the middle of the restaurant. The Tramdepot specialities – including beer with soft pretzels, beef tartare or homemade Farmers “Rösti” – taste best on the spacious terrace with a clear view of the Aare river and the rooftops of the Old Town.

Evening Dinner is with the cool crowd at the Altes Tramdepot, a former tram station that’s been converted into a copper-tank-filled brewery and bar, with yet more old-town views. Share an outdoor table and go for a Tram-Helles beer (£6) and a potato rösti topped with cheese, bacon and apple purée (mains from £16; altestramdepot.ch). For something swankier, the bar at the historic Bellevue Palace hotel has been the preferred drinking spot of everyone from stealthy Second World War spies to Bruce Springsteen (cocktails from £13; bellevue-palace.ch).

Why we recommend it: As the name implies, Altes Tramdepot is a former depot turned super-popular restaurant. It is the address for the cool, offering not just delicious foods and home-brewed beer, but also stunning views of the old town and the Aare river. Sit outside on the patio with a friend, a camera, a book (or all three of them!) and you will have tasted the chilled out lifestyle of the Bernese.

While not exactly a hidden gem anymore, Restaurant Altes Tramdepot deserves a spot on this list. It’s located in a historic tram depot and offers not only a great atmosphere but also an impressive selection of house-brewed beers and traditional Swiss dishes. Be sure to try the “Bernese Tartar” and enjoy the view of the old town from the terrace.

For the “best seat in the house” (especially during the summer), enjoy some lunch at Altes Tramdepot. Psst: This restaurant is right across from the next stop, Bear Park. It’s a restaurant and brewery, famous for its home-brewed beer, wrapped into one with a lovely view of Bern’s Old Town and the Alps.

Our dinner plan was the Restaurant Altes Tramdepot which is right next to the bear park on the banks of the river. We opted to sit outside on their wonderful terrace despite the slightly chilly weather. The view (see photo below) made it worthwhile however so it’s worth doing if you get the chance.

The "tram beers" at the Altes Tramdepot are all unfiltered and natural and are produced without any chemical additives. Each year, the Altes Tramdepot brewing team develops around 30 new speciality beers. The classics include the Tram-Helle, the Tram-Märzen and the Tram-Weizen.

This place is famous for its handcrafted beer, authentic Swiss food, meat dishes, and vegetarian dishes. The ambience here is inestimable with the amazing skyline view of Bern. In Altes Tramdepot, try the home-brewed beer, salads, soups, pretzels, tarts, and burgers.

Altes Tramdepot Brewery & restaurant – With superb views of the BearPark, river and Old Town this restaurant and craft beer hall offers delicious regional dishes in a relaxed setting. The Prestel’s with sweet mustard snack and the potato Rösti main were heavenly.

If you prefer it rustical, definitely visit the Altes Tramdepot: the ambience of the restaurant in the former Tram hall is one of a kind. But the real highlight is the integrated brewery. The tram beers are all unfiltered, natural and without chemical additives.

Tram Depot is a small complex comprised a restaurant and an ice cream parlour. The restaurant is also a brewery, and you can see the huge vats and equipment right behind the bar. If it’s a nice day, I highly recommend sitting outside on a nice day!

Altes Tramdepot Brauerei Restaurant is a unique restaurant and brewery located next to the Bear Park, offering stunning views of Bern’s old town. The menu features Swiss and international dishes, complemented by house-brewed beers.

With hearty lunches and locally made beer, Altes Tramdepot attracts young and old. Four to six times a week, the Tram-beer is brewed in the middle of the restaurant, which serves both international and regional dishes.

If you like beer then you’ll probably love Altes Tramdepot, an integral part of the Bernese gastronomic scene. You can enjoy a home-brewed beer whilst admiring a view of the old town and the atmosphere is friendly too.

This restaurant is one of the restaurants that I had been wanting to go. We always passed by this restaurant but had never tried. It had been already nine years and finally we could manage to go before moving away.

At the restaurant ‘Altes Tramdepot’, guests can enjoy a stunning view of Bern’s Old Town whilst also watching how the ‘Tram-Bier’ is brewed – literally right there in a copper brewing kettle.

In front of the Altes Tramdepot restaurant you will also find a statue of Albert Einstein, who studied in Zurich but later lived in Bern, where he developed his theory of relativity.

Across the Nydeggbrücke is the old tram depot which has been converted into a riverside restaurant and beer garden, offering lovely views back towards the Aldstadt.

And, finally, Altes Tramdepot (located next to the bear park) has great food and is famous for its home-brewed beer.
