Reviews Summary

Diners rave about Altes Tramdepot's stunning views of Bern and the Aare River, especially from the beer garden. The house-brewed beers and hearty Swiss dishes are frequently praised, with the pork knuckle being a standout favorite. While service is generally warm and friendly, some reviews note occasional issues with order accuracy and payment for large groups.

"Spending a sunny Saturday in Bern always feels a little magical. Wandering through the old town, with its beautiful arcades, small boutiques, and cozy cafés, invites you to slow down and enjoy the moment. A short walk brings you to the Bärengraben, where Bern’s famous bears relax by the Aare River, a scene that always makes you smile.

The perfect way to round off the day? A visit to Altes Tramdepot. In this historic building turned lively brewery and restaurant, their house brewed beers and traditional Swiss dishes taste even better with the stunning view over Bern’s rooftops. Whether it’s a beer tasting flight or a hearty rösti, everything is crafted with real care.

A visit to Altes Tramdepot feels like the final piece of a perfect day in Bern- relaxed, authentic, and full of small moments you’ll want to remember."

"A large restaurant with an amazing view, we got to sit outside to soak up the evening sun. I ordered a vegetarian flammkuchen but was served a traditional one. It was tasty and crispy. We also ordered a sausage with sauerkraut, bread and mustard. We had to ask for the bread as it did not come out with our meal. Beer was excellent. Overall a lovely setting to enjoy the view."

Cherie H

"Spectacular view. Impeccable service. The food was among the best I’ve had in Switzerland. Honestly took a 30 min detour just to come here and it was worth it. Make sure you book in advance! Highly recommended."

This convivial lunch spot has the authentic atmosphere of a bustling beer hall – without the kitsch. Known for its dedication to the art of beer, this former tram depot-cum-brewery is worth a visit for its beverages, which are brewed on the premises twice a week in full view of customers (guided tours will appeal to beer buffs). Adding to the venue’s character is its location overlooking the Bear Park, so you can watch Bern’s most famous inhabitants frolic in their riverside enclosure while you drink up.

The most beautiful restaurant terraces in Bern

From the famous bearpark, where Bern’s resident brown bears Finn, Björk and Ursina live in a natural enclosure covering 6,000 square metres, it’s just a few steps to the Altes Tramdepot, a restaurant and brewery all in one. Ranging from light and Märzen to wheat varieties, an impressive over 3,000 hectolitres of beer are brewed here every year, as evidenced by the huge copper brewing kettles in the middle of the restaurant. The Tramdepot specialities – including beer with soft pretzels, beef tartare or homemade Farmers “Rösti” – taste best on the spacious terrace with a clear view of the Aare river and the rooftops of the Old Town.
