Reviews Summary

Äss-Bar is praised for its fantastic concept of reducing food waste by selling day-old baked goods at half price, making it an affordable and sustainable choice in Lucerne. Reviewers highlight the excellent quality and variety of pastries, breads, and sandwiches, with friendly service adding to the positive experience. While some mention it can get busy, the overall consensus is that the quality and price make it a hidden pearl worth visiting.

"Big choice of different pastry, bread, sandwiches with great initiative to rescue 'old' food that is still good and tasty. Everything 50% original price. For example Ricotta pastry for 1.7 CHF. Nice service. Tea and coffee at the place."

Marta Szumiata

"This is an excellent bakery with one-day old pastries from all the bakeries around town. It provided an excellent selection at a good price. We had a great cherry fruit tart and an excellent vanilla & apple cake."

Bob Treue

"Went near closing, not much left apart from this cake. Didnt really like the mango taste of the cake. This may not be a good representation of what they usually have to offer, but its mainly other bakery stuff at a cheaper price, and maybe we got the one that didnt really suit our palettes."

Our Tips for Budget-Friendly Restaurants

Fresh from yesterday” – that is the motto that has gained Ässbar an enthusiastic and loyal clientele within a very short span of time. The principle is as simple as it is clear: bread, sandwiches and pastries from the previous day – all perfectly fine baked goods from local bakeries and patisseries – are sold at a reduced price. Whatever Ässbar’s partners are unable to sell is sold the next morning in the small shop in the old town on Marktgasse alley.

14 Best Restaurants, Cafes & Bakeries in Lucerne, Switzerland

There are a lot of bakeries and cafes in Lucerne, but this one might be my favorite just because it’s so unique. First of all, it’s called the Äss Bar, but äss actually translates to edible. What they do is go around in the evening to other restaurants and shops in Lucerne and pick up the food that those places couldn’t sell.
