The Galliker family has run this old-style Swiss tavern for more than 150 years and the recipes have been passed down more than four generations. Nothing about this place is contemporary—and that’s the appeal. As you step into the dining room with its floral curtains and crisp white tablecloths, you’ll be hit by a wave of loud chatter from the local crowd and shown to your seat by staff who have worked here for decades.

I’m bummed we didn’t have a proper dinner out while in Lucerne (last minute trip = hard to get reservations and coordinate with weather and such) but if we had been able to go out a few spots on my list included the restaurant on Rigi Mountain, Wirtshaus Galliker, a infamous family-owned and operated restaurant that has been around for more than 140 years, and Brasserie Bodu, a cozy bistro-style restaurant.

For a super local experience that is not so hard on the wallet, why not try Wirtshaus Galliker, a traditional tavern that’s been serving Lucerne-style classics since 1856. The room has a lovely wood paneling with that old homely Swiss feeling, and the kind of vibe you come to Europe for. Dishes like the Chügelipastete (a veal pie specialty), rösti, and apple strudel are often local favorites.

For authentic Swiss hospitality: you absolutely should have a dinner at the Wirtshaus Galliker (Schützenstrasse 1), a few steps from the lesser-known wooden bridge of the city: the Spreuerbrücke. At Galliker you will find the classics of Swiss cuisine such as Cordon Blue and Spätzle. But we strongly suggest trying the seasonal dishes, prepared with fresh and local foods too!

Hearty Swiss specialities in a tavern-like setting crammed with people, noise and smoke. The food is consistently excellent, with quality Ch�gelipastetli standing at the top of the pile, joined by Cordon Bleu (veal steak stuffed with cheese and ham), and less palatable offerings such as Kutteln (tripe). Mains are Fr.30�40, not much more than lunchtime menus.

There could hardly be a more authentic place for a culinary flight of fancy. In the Galliker inn, time seems to have stood still - dark panelling and furniture, simple lamps and subdued lighting are contemporary witnesses to this time-honoured inn. Matched by fine game classics that make the gourmet heart beat faster.

Wirtshaus Taube sits alongside the river, on a cobbled street, with indoor and outdoor tables. The menu is written in Luzerner dialect, but you can ask for an English version. Try milk soup, cheese and potatoes, pork sausages, and a wide range of vegetable based dishes.

Not only did I found my favourite chocolatier there, I’ve tasted the best-ever-in-my-life humble iconic Swiss rösti at Wirtshaus Galliker, a charming old-style tavern passionately run by the Galliker family since 1856.
