Kronenhalle is celebrated for its timeless elegance, impeccable service, and classic Swiss cuisine, with dishes like veal and Rösti receiving high praise. While some diners found the experience a bit traditional and pricey, most agree it's a must-visit Zurich institution offering a unique blend of art, history, and fine dining. "Timeless elegance and unforgettable flavors
Dining at Kronenhalle Zürich is like stepping into a piece of culinary history – refined, iconic, and truly special. We had an exceptional evening with a beautifully curated selection of dishes.
The veal liver was tender and rich, cooked to perfection. The shrimp with tomato was light yet full of depth, and the sashimi was fresh and delicate – a surprising and elegant addition to the classic menu.
The atmosphere is steeped in art and tradition, the service is polished and attentive, and every detail reflects true Swiss excellence.
A must-visit in Zurich for anyone who appreciates timeless style and world-class cuisine."

"This is the second michelin restaurant we have ever been to although we are foodies. I was honestly underwhelmed. I understand that they specialize in traditional food from switzerland and the roesti in particular was delicious but for michelin food and michelin prices, I suppose I was expecting something more unique. I also ordered a dish from the seasonal menu which I felt was a bit bland.
In addition, the presentation of the food didnt feel special. 2 of the dishes were brought to the table/heater next to us and scooped into a plate next to us which did not make for pretty plating.
Again, it could be the style, and for the traditional food we had I do think it was done well, but I didnt find them to be anything special that I would go out of my way for again."

"One of the best meals I’ve had this year. So glad my expectations matched what I experienced. Epitome of Swiss hospitality. Great food, impeccable service, and fantastic ambience. There is an old world charm to this place I really appreciated. The customers also reflected that (i.e. men wearing dress shirts and blazers). Definitely a pricy meal, depending on what and how you order. You won’t be disappointed though."

Restaurants in Zürich
From Stravinsky, Brecht, and Joyce to Nureyev, Deneuve, and Saint Laurent, this beloved landmark has always drawn a stellar crowd. Every panel of gleaming wood wainscoting frames artworks by Picasso, Braque, Miró, Chagall, or Matisse, collected by Gustav Zumsteg, whose mother, Hulda, owned the restaurant from 1921 until her death in 1985. The tradition is carried on by the family trust, and robust old-school cooking is still served in hefty portions: veal steak in morel sauce, duck à l'orange with red cabbage, and Späetzle, all delivered from a silver trolley.
The 10 Best Places To Eat In Zurich
With wooden panels adorned with paintings by Chagall, Mirò, Braque and Matisse, Kronenhalle‘s interior matches its elegant menu. Its history figures the likes of Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti and James Joyce, who would often frequent the fashionable restaurant. Kronenhalle remains one of the most celebrated restaurants in Zurich and continues to attract an eclectic mix of visitors.
The Best Things to Do in Zurich, a Switzerland Stopover No More
Both Zunfthaus Zur Waag and Kronenhalle are Zurich institutions serving traditional Swiss cuisine, including a variety of veal dishes, in fine dining atmospheres. For more casual fare, there’s Restaurant Rosso. From the owners of Bar Basso and Osso is this hip pizza joint featuring set course menus; option 3 —house salad, pizza slices, main course, and dessert for 70 CHF—is a wise choice.

The almost 100-year-old Kronenhalle is among the most esteemed of Zurich’s restaurants, with its fabulous food matched by the expensive decor. Alfresco dining doesn’t get better than snuggling under a blanket outside the Zunfthaus zur Zimmerleuten and indulging in an all-you-can-eat fondue session. Zurich is also home to the world’s oldest vegetarian restaurant.

We wander past Kronenhalle Restaurant, a Zurich institution that once was a regular haunt of many influential artists and still has a Chagall and Picasso on its walls today. I’m just sad we won’t have time to try everything on offer.

It might have been Gustav Zumsteg's extensive art collection that originally attracted the rich and the famous, but it's a self-generating phenomenon: more of their like keep on coming.
The Coolest Things to Do in Zurich: Where to Eat, Stay, and Play
There are no hulking security guards or strict photo policies surrounding the incredible art collection at Kronenhalle—a former beer hall turned landmark restaurant in the heart of the city—and that’s just the way its original proprietor, Hulda Zumsteg, would have wanted it. On the walls hang originals by Miró, Picasso, Chagall, Rodin, and Matisse (among others) collected over the years, displayed for all to enjoy. However, the heavy, old-world Swiss cuisine and top-notch service are reason enough to come here: think veal steak, rosti, calf-liver, and baked fillets of sole served on silver platters and custom tableware.
Our Top 9 Restaurants in Zurich: Explore Food in Switzerland
Dining at this legendary Zurich restaurant is a feast for the eyes as much as the palate. Hosting the likes of Cristóbal Balenciaga, Coco Chanel, and Yves Saint Laurent back in the day, Kronenhalle is also home to priceless pieces by Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, and Pierre Bonnard–collected by Gustav Zumsteg, whose mother, Hulda, opened the restaurant in 1924. The legacy carries on thanks to the family foundation–as does the culinary heritage, with hearty Swiss fare, such as sliced calf’s liver with onions and rösti, and beef goulash stroganoff with spaetzle served in three historical wood-paneled dining rooms.
a Zurig Tasting Tour with chef Daniel Humm
Kronenhalle has been a Zurich institution since 1924, with gold lettering marking the name on a slightly austere exterior, while inside it’s all warm wood-panelled rooms, lace curtains, stained glass, brass lamps and white linen tablecloths. The clientele seems old school and moneyed, happy to be served by white-jacketed waiters and waitresses in black dresses with white pinnies, dishing up Swiss classics, many tableside. The strength of the Swiss Franc generally means that dining out is expensive, pretty much everywhere in Zurich.
Zurich, Switzerland Art Scene Guide
Kronenhalle is one of Zurich’s most esteemed dining destinations, where traditional Swiss cuisine is served in a space filled with dozens of masterpieces including artworks by Chagall and Picasso. You can enjoy dishes like Zurich veal and Mistkratzerli (roast baby chicken) in the restaurant, then cap off your evening with an impeccably crafted cocktail at the adjacent Kronenhalle Bar. A fan favorite of this interconnected space is the fumoir (smoking room) above the bar which requires a code to enter.

Tucked inside a stately building on Bellevue Square, which dates back to 1862, the Kronenhalle Restaurant is Zurich’s most famous dining room—a place where art, history, and a dash of old-world drama come together over veal and vintage wine. Opened in 1924 by the formidable Hulda and Gottlieb Zumsteg, it didn’t take long to become the unofficial clubhouse for writers, artists, and the culturally inclined. Ever since, Zurich’s elite—and those who dine like they are—have made it a regular haunt.

For those seeking a very traditional Swiss restaurant, the venerable Kronenhalle (Ramistrasse 3), dating to 1924, endures, still arrayed with its astounding original art by Picasso, Giacometti, Chagall, Bonnard and others hung nonchalantly on the walls above your table. The Swiss beer is good, the Wiener Schnitzel enormous and the desserts rich. But prices have become very high, and this, once my favorite go-to places in Zürich, is now something of a think-and-think-again splurge.
