Magical ice cream parlor straight out of a Harry Potter scene ✨ This must-visit spot in Taichung is Miyahara, and the building itself is stunning—a restored 1920s ophthalmology clinic with vintage wood paneling, high ceilings, and a cozy, nostalgic vibe. We tried the waffle bowl with two scoops, and they even gave free toppings: a little bear cookie, strawberries, and a mini cheesecake on top 🐻🍓🍰....

Reviews Summary

Miyahara is celebrated for its stunning, historic ambiance and its exceptionally creative and delicious ice cream flavors, often praised for their presentation and unique ingredients. While the visual experience and the quality of desserts are consistently lauded, some visitors note the absence of seating and the long queues as potential drawbacks.

"They were not just a dessert shop, it’s a full sensory experience. Nestled in a beautifully preserved historic building with a dramatic, almost Harry Potter-like interior, they delivered both visual splendor and culinary delight.

The ice cream was a masterpiece in both presentation and taste. Served in a delicate waffle bowl, it came adorned with an array of handmade toppings: mini pineapple cake and a charming butterfly cookie. The gelatos were vibrant and packed with flavor—mango, passion fruit, grape, and pistachio.

Each scoop was dense, refreshing, and full of real ingredients. The pineapple cake added a contrast, and the decorative cookie gave a fun crunch. It’s not just dessert, it’s an edible artwork😍"

Yasuやす

"Overall, an enjoyable place with delicious ice cream. There is no seating and the ice cream melts quickly when eaten outside. However, to be expected as I’m there at the end of summer. The flavours were very intriguing and many options were available. There is a toppings station next door where you can add toppings of your choice on the ice cream (1 per every scoop). We weren’t offered samples and I believe they don’t do any. While we lingered outside eating, the staff member brought little sample cups of tea and offered them to us. Great service."

Raveen

"I always enjoy a nice stop whenever I visit Taichung. Grab yourself an ice cream to cool down in summer. They have lots of really interesting flavors to try, there’s something for everybody. You can also get free toppings when they calm you to get your order.

Miyahara itself is an architectural beauty itself too. I stop by just to admire the beauty of the building itself. There’s also lots of nice souvenirs to bring back too. Cookies, fruits, cakes, nuts, candy and much more. The staff are very friendly and can answer all the questions you have."

Taichung, Taiwan – 32 Things To Do Guide + Photos 2024

Miyahara is a beautiful and Instagrammable ‘olde worlde’ red brick building from the 1920s (a former ophthalmology clinic), which now houses an incredibly popular ice cream shop, Miyahara, alongside a retail shop and high-end restaurant. Taichung’s Miyahara n-’ice’ shop interior resembles Hogwarts from the Harry Potter movies and has to be seen to be believed – it is packed full of wall to-wall large bookcases and gleaming shop counters, with staff all besuited in immaculate uniforms. At Miyahara, you will find local snacks such as pineapple cakes, plus luxury tea and coffee, cookies and gourmet chocolates, all presented in beautiful packaging and kept (tantalisingly) behind glass.

My First Taiwan Experience. I have always been curious about what… | by Fleener Lemon Dela Cruz

We first left our things in the lobby and went to the oldest park in Taichung where we spotted squirrels, doves, and various species of birds, After that, we went to the eminent Miyahara Ice Cream Parlour that is known for their variety of delightful and over-the-top ice cream. You can choose from single to triple scoop for $ 90–220, the toppings depend on the number of scoops, with an additional $ 20 for the waffle. Of the many interesting flavours (from chocolates to fruits to anything in between), we chose the Venezuela 72% Chocolate, №9 Erlin Peanut, and Lychee (maybe not a good combination, perhaps, but anyway, that can be charged to experience).

Formerly an ophthalmology clinic during the Japanese colonial period, what is now the retail space known as Miyahara later became a health clinic before being abandoned and experiencing a period of slow decay. Today, however, the storefront has transformed into a home for Dawn Cake – a pastry company renowned for its pineapple cakes and other sweet baked goods and treats. The original red brick walls and archway of the building were preserved, but the rest has been redone in elegant fashion, and the shop has gained a far-reaching reputation for its ice cream.

Entering Miyahara will make you feel like you’ve stumbled upon a Harry Potter set – with a grand chandelier, gothic-style cupboards, and towering wooden columns lined with (fake) books, this opulent dessert store – once a Japanese eye clinic – could pass off as the Hogwarts library.
