Established in a renovated Japanese ophthalmology clinic, Miyahara Ice Cream is not only renowned for its decadent desserts but also for its unique blend of history and epicurean delight. The establishment is positioned in the heart of Taichung and has become a celebrated landmark, known for preserving the architectural charm of the pre-war Taichung era while creating an atmospheric homage to the "Harry Potter" series, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in a fantasy world. Miyahara is a beautiful and Instagrammable ‘olde worlde’ red brick building from the 1920s (a former ophthalmology clinic), which now houses an incredibly popular ice cream shop, Miyahara, alongside a retail shop and high-end restaurant. Taichung’s Miyahara n-’ice’ shop interior resembles Hogwarts from the Harry Potter movies and has to be seen to be believed – it is packed full of wall to-wall large bookcases and gleaming shop counters, with staff all besuited in immaculate uniforms. At Miyahara, you will find local snacks such as pineapple cakes, plus luxury tea and coffee, cookies and gourmet chocolates, all presented in beautiful packaging and kept (tantalisingly) behind glass.

We first left our things in the lobby and went to the oldest park in Taichung where we spotted squirrels, doves, and various species of birds, After that, we went to the eminent Miyahara Ice Cream Parlour that is known for their variety of delightful and over-the-top ice cream. You can choose from single to triple scoop for $ 90–220, the toppings depend on the number of scoops, with an additional $ 20 for the waffle. Of the many interesting flavours (from chocolates to fruits to anything in between), we chose the Venezuela 72% Chocolate, №9 Erlin Peanut, and Lychee (maybe not a good combination, perhaps, but anyway, that can be charged to experience).

Formerly an ophthalmology clinic during the Japanese colonial period, what is now the retail space known as Miyahara later became a health clinic before being abandoned and experiencing a period of slow decay. Today, however, the storefront has transformed into a home for Dawn Cake – a pastry company renowned for its pineapple cakes and other sweet baked goods and treats. The original red brick walls and archway of the building were preserved, but the rest has been redone in elegant fashion, and the shop has gained a far-reaching reputation for its ice cream.

From here, keep heading southeast to the always-popular Miyahara Eye Hospital (宮原眼科). Don’t worry, they won’t offer you Lasik surgery, the Miyahara is another Japanese-era building that’s been given new life and is architecturally fascinating inside and out. Hang out for a while, buy yourself an ice-cream at the next-level awesome ice-cream shop on the first floor (you can’t miss it – there’s always a line), and head across the street to the Green River Trail (綠川親水步道), a cool riverside park that’s filled with art & places to sit and eat ice cream.

During the famed Taiwan Economic Miracle of the 20 th century’s second half, when the local economy expanded at breakneck pace, islanders knocked down old buildings at equal pace to make way for the new. Today there is equal passion for preserving the country’s architectural heritage, and Taichung City boasts many fine showcase projects. Miyahara (www.miyahara.com.tw), a maker of confections, has saved and renovated a Japanese-era eye-clinic building at 20 Zhongshan Road and a 1960’s credit-cooperative building at 72 Zhongshan.

Entering Miyahara will make you feel like you’ve stumbled upon a Harry Potter set – with a grand chandelier, gothic-style cupboards, and towering wooden columns lined with (fake) books, this opulent dessert store – once a Japanese eye clinic – could pass off as the Hogwarts library. Head up the staircase and you’ll find yourself at their equally fancy-looking restaurant, Moon Pavilion. They serve an assortment of sweet treats and Taiwanese dishes, but we say, go straight for the desserts.

It also belonged to the Taichung Health Bureau for a bit after WWII but was pretty much in disrepair and left to decay for quite awhile until pastry shop Dawncake 日出 came along and revitalised it completely. Inside the red bricked building you are greeted with lovely high ceilings and soaring wooden shelves.

Another wildly popular and trendy food stop is the relatively recent phenomenon, Miyahara Ice Cream, and not just for the ice cream either. The ice cream parlour, with its super-large multicoloured, multiflavoured ice cream, is housed in a historical building, once Miyahara Opthamologist’s clinic in 1927, which was given an extreme makeover after it was purchased by a Taichung confectionery company in 2010.

This retail space, which is often described as having a 1940s or “Harry Potter” feel to it, occupies a building that was once an ophthalmology clinic owned by a Japanese man named Miyahara. One place you can be certain will be busy is Miyahara Ophthalmology (eye clinic), which in commercial terms is surely one of the most successful building-repurposing projects in all of Taiwan, let alone Taichung. Built in 1927 for Takekuma Miyahara, a prosperous Japanese-born eye doctor, it was taken over by the ROC government when Japan surrendered at the end of World War II.

Today it is a famous dessert shop selling ice cream, cheesecake, pineapple cake, chocolates, tea, cookies, and tea snacks. Also, it retains the name and appearance of the old building, which makes this dessert shop a famous attraction in Taichung.

Speaking of getting souvenirs, Miyahara is one of the best places in Taichung for food souvenirs. It’s an extremely popular dessert and sweets restaurant right in the middle of the city that meets both the hype and everyone’s expectations of how delicious their products are. The most popular item to get here is there ice cream.

We were headed to Miyahara Ice Cream, a place that’s gained quite a photographic reputation. Inside gorgeous displays of old bookshelves stacked up to the rafters looked like something you’d find in Diagon Alley!. The staff skipping around the store dressed like 20-century pixies felt like a different age, a time when ice cream was still considered a luxury!

But before you get going to these places, you must explore the local Miyahara signature ice cream, near the Taichung train station and you can also plan to pack some of their delicious bakeries as souvenirs for your loved ones. While enjoying your ice cream, you can also take advantage of the locker facility nearby, in case you need to deposit your luggage.

Without a doubt the most famous ice cream parlor in Taichung. If you go to Taichung from Taipei by train you have it easy because it is very close to the station. If not, although it will take about 10 or 15 minutes by taxi from the city center, it is worth it because of how curious it is.

The famous Miyahara Ice Cream confectionary is an old ophthamology clinic and the actual ice cream parlor is in an old bank. Many former military dormitories and villages have also been converted into art and cultural centers, including one of my favorite places, Rainbow Village.

The rest of our time in Taichung was spent walking the streets of the city where we saw temples, historic Japanese buildings, craft markets, parks, and a really fun dessert place called Miyahara that looks like it was teleported here from Harry Potter.

Pastries, souvenirs, scrumptious cookies, ice cream, and pineapple cakes!. What more goodies could a tourist ask for?. Radiating a very Harry Potter rustic-like vibe Miyahara houses a range of delectable delicacies and memoirs you can take back home.

Many sites have gone through periods of restoration including the iconic Taichung Shiyakusho (city office), the Miyahara Eye Clinic, Old Taichung Train Station, the Fourth Credit Union, Sunny-cake Museum, Wanchun Temple, Central Bookstore, and more,

Miyahara is fantastic for folks who love ice cream and want to explore a unique-looking place. It’s also near the riverside, which is great to explore. They have more than 50 flavors, including Honey Cheese, Alishan Oolong Tea, and Caramel Apple.

This will probably be one of the most beautiful ice cream shop you will ever visit. The main branch is located near Taichung Station but they have 2-3 branches dotted around the neighbourhood as well. Do not leave Taichung without coming here.

Miyahara is an immensely popular spot in Taichung, for both its interior decor and its wide variety of ice cream. Definitely worth a visit.
