Din Tai Fung Fuxing Restaurant

For Chinese-food lovers in Taipei, Din Tai Fung is legendary. Originating as a retail business selling cooking oil back in the 1950s, the restaurant was transformed into a noodle and dumpling establishment in 1972. With branches all over the world, including in Japan, South Korea and Australia, Din Tai Fung is famous for its tasty fare and is a recipient of the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.

When it comes to getting xiao long bao (soup dumplings) in Taiwan, Din Tai Fung (awarded one Michelin star by the 2010 Hong Kong and Macau Michelin Guide) is usually the first place that comes to mind. It should come as no surprise that not only does it top our list of best soup dumplings spots in Taiwan, but also that many of the other restaurants on the list will have their dumplings compared to those found here. One of the most popular Din Tai Fung branches among travelers is on the basement floor of the iconic Taipei 101, which boasts a large window separating diners from the kitchen, through which diners can watch a team of a dozen chefs as they go through the 18 delicate motions it takes to make each dumpling.

TAIPEI YONG KANG STREET HAS A LOT OF FAMOUS EATS (mango shaved ice, original Din Tai Fung, spring onion pancake that now always has a line- for more details, check out my guide to Yong Kang Street ), but also a lot of unexplored side alleys with restaurants filled with locals rather than tourists. Tried this knife cut beef noodle shop for the first time today (there are two on Yong Kang, this one is in an adjacent alley. The other one, Yi Ping, where I took a writer for CNN ended up including it in his best beef noodle soup list and now there hangs a red banner announcing its inclusion 😂).

If you haven’t heard of Din Tai Fung before, where have you been?. Now one of the most famous dumpling restaurant chains in the world with outposts as far afield as Australia and the UK, it all started back in 1958 in Taiwan. Best known for its xiaolongbao soup dumplings, Din Tai Fung is affordable and generally very good (we’ve been to several branches in and around Taiwan and always had first class fodder) – however, the original store (in Da’an) is one of the hardest to visit as the queues always seem to snake around the block.

If you haven’t heard of Din Tai Fung before, where have you been?. One of the most popular chain restaurants on the Taiwan dining scene, there are branches all over Taipei and Taiwan plus has outposts as far afield as Australia and the UK – so why not try it at the source?!. It all started back in 1958 with their Din Tai Fung branch at the end of Yongkang Street, and they now have branches all over Taipei, most of which stay open until around 8.30pm.

No one ever visits Taipei without stepping foot inside Din Tai Fung to devour delectable soup dumplings, or xiao long bao, that have the entire world impressed and ready for more. Din Tai Fung’s meticulous execution spans from its flavorful dishes to impeccable service and dining ambiance. In addition to the soup dumplings, do not hesitate to also order shrimp fried rice, vegetable steamed dumplings and shrimp shumai are also mouthwatering choices.

A Solo 2-Night, 3-Day Adventure in Taipei Day 1: Arriving in Taipei in the evening, I started by buying souvenirs, visiting a night market for a quick bite, and enjoying a relaxing massage. Day 2 and Day 3: I made full use of the Taipei Funpass to explore the city!. The unlimited metro access allowed me to travel freely, such as visiting Huashan 1914 Creative Park and Longshan Temple in the morning, then returning to the hotel without hesitation.

The skin of the dumplings is paper thin but never tears, a classic metric for the quality of preparation.

Din Tai Fung is famous in Taiwan for its dumplings and they have a number of restaurants across the city. We visited the restaurant in Fuxing which is located in the basement of a large shopping mall right beside the Zhongxiao Fuxing metro station.

This is Taiwan’s most well-known Xiao Long Bao (a type of Chinese steamed bun) chain. Renowned for its very thin crust cake, delectable dumplings cooked to medium, so that every mouthful piece is buried in your teeth, and sweet meat delightful bits. Because of its the famousness , so you usually have to go there to queue to get the seat number and wait 15-30 minutes.

Dim Sum- Din Tai Fung: This chain is so popular we actually had to wait one hour to get a table. So many locals were eating there which is always a good sign when going out to eat in a different country. They also have two kinds of soup dumplings if you only can make it to one restaurant then go to this because you will get both of the dumpling experiences there 🙂

Now, if you and your special someone are foodies who don’t love traveling as much as others, you can eat out in any of the Din Tai Fung Restaurants. World-renowned for their xiao long bao, this restaurant chain is also home to more authentic Taiwanese comfort food. The Din Tai Fung bistros are simple and affordable Taiwan dating spots that you go to whenever.

The skin on these was a little thicker than some of the incredibly delicate thin-skinned dumplings that I know and love from places such as Din Tai Fung, but that isn't to say that they were bad. They were chewy, they were tasty, and the sauerkraut filling was an interesting flavour combination that I wasn't expecting to work, but it just kind of did.

This is the most popular and classic option for people who are first timers to Taiwan. Of course, there are locations all around the world now, but there’s something special about going in Taipei, where it was originally established. You’ll usually have to wait, anywhere from 20 mins to over an hour, at any of the bustling locations in Taipei.

The original Din Tai Fung (194 Xinyi Rd., Section 2, Da-an District) is totally worth a trip even though we have a branch right here at CentralWorld. Reason one: the xiaolongbao mascot outside. Reason two: there’s a gift shop selling key chains, magnets, vinegar and oh-so-much more.

You can find soup dumplings at any mom and pop shop on just about every street corner, but the mecca is Din Tai Fung. You may have eaten here before as the restaurant has outposts around the world and quite a few locations in the U.S., but make no mistake, it’s a Taiwanese staple.

The most famous dumpling restaurant - they even have chocolate dumplings!. Just make sure you make a reservation or arrive very early to avoid queues. Ding Tai Fung is so famous that they have different branches abroad, including one Michelin star restaurant in Hong kong.

This restaurant is well known all over the world for its soup dumplings. A staple for locals, each dumpling is measured to perfection in size and shape, they’re always precise!. The menu is full of Taiwanese favorites to try, it’s a great way to experience our cuisine.

Steamed buns (xiao lóng bāo) are not only a favorite dish in Taiwan, it is an internationally recognized award winning dish. There is an internationally recognized restaurant chain called Din Tai Fung that specializes in steamed bun dumplings that originated in Taiwan.

Din Tai Fung is undoubtedly Taipei (and Taiwan’s) most famous restaurant. The restaurant specializes at Shanghai-style xiaolongbao (小籠包) or “soup dumplings” (湯包), because the meat produces soup inside of them when steamed. The bao are steamed and served in baskets.

While you can get arguably the world’s best XLBs (xiao long bao, pork soup dumplings) at Din Tai Fung in the U.S., it’s pretty special to try it in Taiwan where the empire started. There is a location inside Taipei 101, the tallest building in Taiwan.

But Din Tai Fung is kind of a big deal in Taiwan, and honestly, I really enjoyed my dinner there. The original shop is in Taipei, but it’s basically just a tiny takeout spot. I ended up going to the one in Taipei 101, which still felt pretty iconic.

Even if you’ve been to the restaurant elsewhere, you still have to try the one in Taiwan. I swear the ingredients and flavors are noticeably better. Aside from their soup dumplings, I also like getting their fried rice and chicken soup.

For lunch, we headed to the original Din Tai Fung on Xinyi Road in the Daan district. When we got there at around 2.30pm, there was a huge crowd waiting outside. I hear that the wait times can be 2hrs plus during peak lunch periods.

If you’ve been reading more about where to eat in Taipei, it won’t surprise you that Din Tai Fung is mentioned first. It’s almost as if a trip to Taipei isn’t complete without eating at Din Tai Fung. That’s how popular it is.

Afterward, take the historic Star Ferry to Hong Kong Island. Explore the vibrant district of Central–Mid-Level Escalator and visit the iconic Peak Tram to reach Victoria Peak (The Peak). Enjoy panoramic views of the city.

I know, you probably have this one saved already, but I simply can’t skip it. Din Tai Fung is an internationally recognised chain which was founded in Taipei back in 1972. The original shop even has a Michelin star!

The only other Chinese “brunch” restaurant with a Michelin star is Din Tai Fung. However, the Tim Ho Wan and Din Tai Fung Taipei locations aren’t rated by the Michelin Guide. Who really gives a flying fuck though?.

There’s a branch of Taipei favourite Din Tai Fung at the bottom of Taipei 101. Don’t expect to just nip in for a quick dinner though. It’s probably the most popular branch in the city and so queues can be long.

Din Tai Fung is a well-established dumpling restaurant that we are completely in love with. Honestly, this is one of the best restaurants we have been to in Taipei and their steamed dumplings are to die for.

Our absolute favorite place to eat soup dumplings in Taipei is Din Tai Fung. There are seven Din Tai Fung locations around Taipei so you can easily find one.

At the base there is a mall and the famous Din Tai Fung (if you don’t mind waiting in a never-ending queue), as well as a Metro stop to get you back home.
