What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Lazuli Cafe is a beloved hidden gem praised for its incredibly fresh and delicious Swahili-inspired food, particularly the curries and customizable juices, all offered at exceptionally affordable prices. While the cozy, intimate atmosphere is a draw, diners should be prepared for slow service as dishes are cooked to order. It's recommended for those seeking authentic flavors away from tourist crowds, with a friendly vibe despite its unassuming appearance.
"Hidden gem and if you see it from the outside you wouldn’t give a penny. Most of the dishes are half price compared to touristic restaurants. Very good food and especially fresh (they might not have everything and they go out to buy fresh fruits or missing ingredients, therefore you get very fresh dishes and drinks). Plan around 30min till the food is served because they cook stuff in the moment.
We had the best cooked tuna ever. We suggest to get the fish of the day.
The staff is also very nice and welcoming.
If you see there’s nobody inside, they’re in the kitchen, feel feee to knock 😂"

"Super nice little restaurant! Delicious food for a very friendly price, compared to other restaurants around. Burgers, wraps, curry, ,++ and great fresh juice. Try the ginger soda!
The people working there are friendly and welcoming. If you want to get away from the typical tourist places, this is the place!"

"Our preferred restaurant in Stone Town, offering succulent food for unbeatable prices (4 people for under 70k Tsh). Curries are tasty, fishburgers attractive and the selection of wraps is quite creative. Fruit juices can be mixed to your taste. Service super friendly while a bit slow because it takes time to make good food from scratch. About 15 seats but we never saw more than 2 tables occupied. A bit hidden in a side street back the Dolphin but worth looking for it!"

A tiny blue-lined door frame and the fine printed "Lazuli" sign are all that let you know that you have found this little street-side cafe. The large wraps and fruit smoothies are prepared with fresh, local ingredients. There are only a few tables, and service can be glacial, but the smoothies are worth it on a hot and humid day.

This colourful, intimate spot is known for its natural ingredients, and fresh, healthy, Swahili-inspired lunches and dinners. You’ll find curries, chapati wraps, sandwiches, burgers, seafood and pancakes on the menu, as well as their popular fruit juices and smoothies. I chose one of their daily specials: a satisfying, delicately spiced fish coconut curry stew with cinnamon-infused rice for 12,000 TSh (see featured photo at the top of this post).

When your stomach begs for biriyani and curry reprieve, head to Lazuli on Shangani Street , a relaxed little corner cafe popular for its healthy salads, wraps, freshly squeezed juices and smoothies - try the date and honey. Owned by a South African woman and her Zanzibari husband, it has a typical laid-back island pace, with colorful plastic tables, children playing outside and the odd cat miaowing at your feet.

Best places to eat in Stone Town #ZANZ
We were just looking for a place to have drinks and found this cute and simplistic cafe. It is really a hidden gem because it is not on a popular road. However, it is easily noticeable since it is close to the more expensive and well-known "Stone Town Cafe".
