Krua Thara is a long-established restaurant that has been catering for travellers and locals with its choice of authentic Thai cuisine blending fresh seafood and exotic spices. Krua Thara (‘Thara Family’) seems to encapsulate the entire Nopparat Thara dining scene: live fish tanks, fresh seafood baskets, bright lights and welcoming staff members. This restaurant in Nopparat Thara is miles away from the fine-dining scenes of Krabi but it delivers the goods – outstanding fresh seafood – in an unpretentious manner.

Near the top of the list is Krua Thara, a locally famous eatery fronted by tanks of still-swimming seafood. This no-frills spot dishes out plates of fresh, raw oysters and steamed cockles to munch on before you dig into a whole snapper, grilled scallops, saltwater crab or squid sizzled with garlic and pepper, to name a few. This is also a good place to try pak lieang, a leafy green with earthy tones that you’ll rarely find served in other regions of Thailand.

(Krua Thara. See below.) The prices here were great and you can book via Facebook, which is handy. (They get very busy in the evenings.) My only complaint is that you don’t get an entirely private room for your treatments, presumably unless you ask. (It’s like a hospital bed situation with a curtain down the middle of the room.) So in the middle of my massage, they pulled a curtain closed and another tourist entered the room.

For a more “local” seafood meal, head for either Wang Sai Seafood or Krua Thara – both located on Nopparat Thara beach. Wang Sai is at the Ao Nang end, just over the bridge, whereas Krua Thara is at the opposite end, in the National Park car park. The emphasis here is on the food – decor, ambience and service are secondary concerns.
