Reviews Summary

Methavalai Sorndaeng is celebrated for its authentic, traditional Thai cuisine and its unique, nostalgic ambiance, enhanced by live music. While many praise the quality and flavors, some find the dishes spicy or too salty, and service can be inconsistent at times. Despite mixed reviews on service, the overall experience is often deemed worthwhile for its culinary heritage and vintage charm.

"With Michelin rewards for many years, this place is worth to go when you visit this area. The food tastes in general is good. It’s not so spicy for foreigners who not get use to a spicy food. Service is great, most waiters are quite informative and friendly. In terms of price, it a bit high. However, you could enjoy live traditional Thai songs during lunch and dinner."

"This is one of my favorite restaurants, and I always recommend it to friends, clients, or any foreigners who want to try authentic Thai cuisine. It’s one of the few places that still serves traditional dishes like Kratong Thong, Mee Krob Chao Wang, Moo Krajok, and Por Pia Tod a great starter set that lets you sample a variety of flavors at a very reasonable price.

The ambiance is classic and elegant, almost like stepping back into a Suntaraporn-era Thailand, with live piano music and traditional Thai singers performing classic Luk Krung songs while you enjoy your meal. It adds a nostalgic and sophisticated touch to the dining experience.

Today, I ordered some of my favorite dishes. The Green Curry was a hit, mild enough for foreigners to enjoy while still keeping the authentic Thai flavors. The Gaeng Kua Pu Cha-Om (Crab Curry with Acacia Omelet) was rich and flavorful, and the Tom Kha Gai (Coconut Chicken Soup) was another must-try dish. If you’re looking for something special, the Yam Sam Grob (Three Crispy Flavors Salad) is a standout, offering a perfect balance of sweet, sour, and spicy.

This restaurant is a true gem, perfect for introducing foreign visitors to traditional Thai cuisine in a setting that feels both nostalgic and elegant. Highly recommended! 🎶🍛"

"This is an authentic traditional Thai food Michelin star restaurant! And yes, the food lived up the reputation.

I've been going to Bangkok many, many times for more than 40 years, and I can say this could be one of the best Thai food I've tasted.

The service is also good and they have live music."

The Best Michelin-Starred Thai Restaurants In Bangkok

For properly old school, refined and regal Thai fine dining, with all the bells, whistles, pomp and ceremony of the Royal courts of The Kingdom as a backdrop to your evening, you can’t do much better than Methavalai Sorndaeng, a Phra Nakhon institution still going strong after six decades. It’s a real special occasion sort of place for Thai folk of a certain age, and you’ll see old married couples, suited, booted and moonlight-silver haired, enjoying timeless preparations of dishes like rich red curry of duck and pineapple, or intricate tartlets of diced potato, carrot and sweetcorn, that still somehow manages to come up tasting decidedly Thai. The gold embroidered furniture and crooner louchely leaning on a grand old piano to serenade the dining room only serve to emphasise the vibe here.

10+3 Best Places to Eat in Bangkok Old Town (Rattanakosin)| 13 ร้านอร่อย เมืองเก่ารัตนโกสินทร์

This place is one of the longest-running Thai restaurants that I know of. And it somehow managed to be on Michelin Bangkok Guide, too. No matter what the red books say, I would say that not all Thai people come here for the tastes of the foods (which I found ok, but not that great to be honest) alone, but also for their plush interior, good services and the fact that their foods are not that horrendously expensive.
