🍗🔥Bangkok’s Best Chicken Wings Everyone talks about Som Tam Jay So’s papaya salad and sure, it’s bright, spicy, and unforgettable. But here’s the truth: the real star of the show is hiding on the grill. These chicken wings are marinated deep, kissed by charcoal, and served up with skin so crispy it practically crackles. Inside? Juicy, smoky perfection that’ll stop you mid-bite. You’ll nod, you’ll ...

Reviews Summary

Som Tam Jay So is celebrated for its authentic and intensely flavorful Isaan cuisine, with highlights like the crispy BBQ chicken and vibrant papaya salads. While the authentic, bustling atmosphere is part of its charm, service can be chaotic, and some find the spice levels challenging. It's a must-visit for those seeking genuine Thai street food flavors.

"The friendly staff gave us English order slip. We just tick what we want and waited a short while. Grilled chicken wings was flavorful, grilled pork neck was very very tender and nice, grilled pork neck in salad was a nice surprise. The salad is mixed in mint leaves, etc and grilled pork neck. It was really delicious! We also ordered the mango salad and papaya salad. The papaya salad was not as sour and spicy as the mango salad. Both are different.
The excitement comes when the heat from the chilli comes after a few bites. Even the chilli condiments was fantastic. Luckily we ordered a bottle of water with lots of ice.
The chef is worthy of the title, Iron chef!!"

"The bbq chicken was tender and moist on the inside and surprisingly crispy on the outside, the meat is very flavourful, well marinated. Easy to order using the English order sheet, place is quite warm and small, but staff are helpful speaking limited English. The lady boss whom I think took part in iron chef speaks English so feel free to check with her. The lotus salad is unique and fun to eat and cuts thru the oiliness of the grilled meat. Overall, a good place to visit for local meal but prepare wet tissue and fan."

"Som Tam Jay So is an absolute gem for authentic Isaan flavors! We loved it so much that we came back three days in a row. Their Som Tam Thai is perfectly balanced with spice, sweetness, and tang. The grilled pork neck (Kor Moo Yang) was tender and flavorful, and the larb moo had just the right kick. If you want real Thai food. This is the spot ."

Som Tam Jay So is located down a quiet side street in Bangkok's Silom business district. Locals flock here for som tam, a well-known Isaan dish that's an addictive combination of sugar, fruit, garlic, fish sauce, and an overabundance of chilis. To balance out the spice, order some tender marinated chicken, grilled onsite, or go for a variation on the classic papaya salad.

Fragrant Curries, Refreshing Salads, and Plenty of Noodles: Where to Eat in Bangkok, According to Our Thai Cuisine Experts

Though it may look like a shopworn grocer from the street—complete with a dingy plastic water cooler, open boxes of cut coconuts for sale, and a fading, sagging awning that has clearly seen better days—Som Tom Jay So, in the Silom area, is a dependable place that honors the Isan palate, says Lucci. Pull up a plastic red stool to one of the folding metal tables and order one of the aforementioned sour, sweet, salty, and spicy regional favorites or an Isan dish less known to Western diners, like gaeng om gai, a brothy dill chicken curry that’ll likely upend what you think you know about Thai curries. It’s a tried-and-true Bangkok restaurant where Lucci can refresh his concepts and palate for Isan cuisine and come up with ideas, like that laab papaya salad recipe of his.

The 10 Best Thai Restaurants in Bangkok in 2016

There are plenty of Isaan restaurants in Bangkok, and many of them are very good, but some seem to lack that real pungently powerful Isaan flavor that you get in Isaan. Som Tam Jay So (ร้านส้มตำเจ๊โส), located in Silom, is a restaurant in Bangkok where you’ll find the real deal, and I think it’s one of the best Isaan restaurants in Bangkok. Their grilled chicken wings (pik gai yang ปีกไก่ย่าง) are good, the beef laab (laab neua ลาบเนื้อ) is sour and spicy, and the jungle green papaya salad (tam pa ตำป่า) is everything you want in green papaya salad — and it will light your mouth on fire from the chilies and fermented fish sauce.
