With a focus on providing farm-to-table meals, The Fat Mermaid uses only locally sourced ingredients, purchasing all of their fruits and vegetables from farmers in the Valdez area.

The Fat Mermaid not only has a memorable name, but it also has memorable food and a nice harbor restaurant feel. It is located directly across from the boat docks and close to the harbor gift shops, so it’s an easy place to duck into for a meal if you are already near the water. While Valdez is not nearly as touristy as Seward, this particular restaurant will get packed, so we recommend making a reservation in advance.

Obviously, fishing is one of the biggest draws to Valdez, Alaska, but there is so much to that beautiful region of Alaska!. As we drove in, Ryan and I both commented that the drive alone would have been worth it for the absolutely epic views. There are waterfalls all around, you pass the Worthington Glacier, and the thick fog gave way to huge mountains, lakes, and rolling hills all around.

The Fat Mermaid on North Harbor Drive offers sensational pizza and a full bar with occasional live music and an outdoor dining area. A cluster of food trucks also on North Harbor Drive offer delicious variety, among them local favorites Nat Shack, with artisan tacos and Cal-Mex fare; and Aunty Yum Yum’s, boasting bountiful and authentic Thai cuisine.

If you are looking for a place to relax, get a bite to eat and maybe enjoy a beer then The Fat Mermaid is a good choice in Valdez. The pizzas come highly recommended and due to the location, it is nice to be able to sit outside on the terrace. It is also a place where people gather for an after-dinner beer.

Another waterfront Valdez restaurant that continues to impress is the Fat Mermaid. They like to boast their farm to table approach and brand themselves a healthier choice with vegan, gluten free, and vegetarian options. And by Alaska standards, they ain’t too pretty bad when it comes to that stuff.

The Fat Mermaid has an extensive menu of salads and vegetarian options as well as appetizers, burgers, sandwiches and mains. We ordered the fish tacos. Their taco options consist of three soft shells, a combination of corn and wheat flour, with a choice of meats including several fish options.

The Fat Mermaid - ok, this comes highly recommend from pretty much everyone, but I've found it can be a hit and miss, because this is where most tours go - it can often be overcrowded - and although it was delicious the first time, my two most recent visits were a bit disappointing

Ok, this the only thing on this list that’s not actually free. But if you’re looking for a good meal in Valdez, check out the Fat Mermaid. We stopped in for brunch and the portion sizes were huge, I don’t think we ate anything else the rest of the day.
