Reviews Summary

De Kas offers an exceptional and unique dining experience, celebrated for its innovative Mediterranean cuisine, stunning greenhouse ambiance, and commitment to farm-to-table principles. Guests rave about the freshness of ingredients, exquisite flavors, and impeccable service. While highly praised, some note that reservations are essential and can be difficult to secure, and the strong flavors might be intense for some palates.

"An exceptional fine dining journey at De Kas

Dining at De Kas is far more than a meal—it is a beautifully curated experience that celebrates seasonality, craftsmanship, and a true sense of place. Set within a striking glasshouse, the ambiance is both refined and serene, perfectly framing the culinary artistry that unfolds course by course.

The six-course tasting menu was nothing short of extraordinary—elegant compositions that highlighted the purity of the ingredients while surprising the palate with creativity and finesse. After the fifth course, guests are given the delightful choice of one or two desserts, a gesture that perfectly encapsulates the restaurant’s thoughtful approach to indulgence.

What makes De Kas truly remarkable is its philosophy: the menu evolves every three to four weeks, shaped almost entirely by produce grown in their own gardens and on their farm north of Amsterdam. For the few elements not cultivated in-house, such as animal products, they source with meticulous care from trusted local partners. The result is cuisine that feels at once innovative and deeply authentic.

Service was exemplary—warm yet discreet, attentive yet never intrusive. Each dish was introduced with genuine passion and precision, offering insight into its inspiration and preparation. The wine pairings were chosen with great expertise, enhancing each plate and creating a flawless harmony between food and glass.

De Kas delivers not just dinner, but an unforgettable gastronomic narrative. A destination that deserves to be experienced more than once, it stands as one of Amsterdam’s most compelling fine dining addresses."

"We had lunch there quite some time ago and enjoyed it. We liked the idea that they grow their own ingredients and serve them fresh. You can see the greenhouse right at the entrance, which is a nice touch.

The staff welcomed us warmly when we arrived, and the service inside was good too. They were helpful and open to questions about the food and the menu.

Each dish was nicely presented and tasted good—sometimes the flavors were quite strong. When you have several dishes together, it might feel a bit overwhelming because everything is quite flavorful. But of course, that depends on personal preference.

We sat in the dining hall, which was a bit noisy. Not sure if it was because of sound bouncing off the windows. It might be better on a nice day when the doors and windows can be opened. So that reason we will head back there again in summer."

KN IWN

"De Kas restaurant truly deserves a 5-star rating. It has completely restored my faith in restaurants. We were so impressed by the flavors, the presentation, the attentiveness of the staff, and the cozy atmosphere: both in the main restaurant and the greenhouse, that we’re already planning our next visit.

We chose the 4-course menu but were delighted with two additional surprise dishes. Every plate was absolutely delicious, made with ingredients picked that very morning, and each one had its own unique and memorable flavor. I highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a truly special dining experience."

In a bucolic setting at Park Frankendael, a former country estate in Amsterdam’s Oost (East), De Kas pioneered “plant to plate” dining when it opened in 2001, and it now holds both red and green Michelin stars. The greenhouse and open-air gardens here and polder field close by produce around 300 different kinds of vegetables, herbs and fruit that shine in seasonal three- to five-course lunch menus and five- and six-course dinner menus inspired by the day’s harvest. Planning tip: Meat and seafood feature but above all this is a celebration of plants.

To reach De Kas, you have to venture a little further afield, but once you arrive, it’s more than worth the journey. Situated in the suburban Park Frankendael—surely one of Amsterdam’s most picturesque green spaces, in a city that’s full of them—the restaurant inhabits a historic greenhouse and is run by the friends Wim de Beer and Jos Timmer, with the majority of the food that lands on your plate either coming from its on-site kitchen garden, or its much larger farm half an hour north of the city in Beemster. As a result, the menu changes at least weekly—sometimes more often—depending on what is landing on the chef’s counter each day.
