Reviews Summary

Moeders is celebrated for its authentic, homemade Dutch cuisine and exceptionally generous portions, creating a warm and homely dining experience. Diners rave about the unique, quirky atmosphere adorned with pictures of mothers and the friendly, attentive service. While highly popular and often requiring reservations, the food quality and welcoming ambiance make it a must-visit for a taste of traditional Dutch comfort food.

"Come with a reservation if you want to be seated indoors. Food portion was huge for Asians like us so it was worth the price. You will definitely leave the place full. We had the soup of the day, mushroom soup which was served piping hot and delicious. Spare rib portion was enormous, it could probably feed 2 pax. The beef Stew was equally look and well seasoned. Only down side is that it's a small space so do be prepared to seat closely with other patrons."

Gabriel

"The vibe of the place is the most memorable, with hundreds of photos of mothers adorning the walls. I was in awe the moment I entered the restaurant.

Of course the food was very good as well, I was happy to try the authentic Dutch dishes - the stewed beef was tender and fragrant; soups were delicious too… a bit filling as serving is generous, so if you’re a small eater, you may want to share one soup between two to save appetite for the main course and dessert.

We didn’t make a reservation, thinking that on a Tuesday 6pm, we should be able to get a table. Boy were we wrong as this place is popular! We were lucky to get a table for two but better to book in advance to avoid disappointment."

Yvonne Lau

"A very popular spot in Amsterdam. They have a nice original system where you sit outside and can order snacks and drinks whilst you wait for a table to order from menu. Located on the outer Amsterdam you avoid all the hassling. The restaurant has a lovely theme of 1000s of framed photos of mothers and children. A lovely atmosphere. Food was good, service great and food nice. Price as expected. Worth a visit."

Jordaans 10 Best Local Restaurants Amsterdam Dining Guide

Established back in 1990 by owner Jurriaan, who still runs the restaurant today, Moeders has been a fixture of the Jordaan dining scene for more than 20 years. Moeders means ‘mothers’ and a homely and inviting ambience typified by wholesome, homemade family recipes is exactly the atmosphere conjured up here. The walls are decorated with vintage family photos, antique plates and cookware.

Full of character and warmth, Moeders (Dutch for ‘mothers’) offers a little bit of chaos and a lot of carbs, serving traditional Dutch dishes from stamppot to suddervlees (beef stew with boiled potatoes and red cabbage). If you’re struggling to choose, opt for the Hollandse rijsttafel — a winning combination for two to share featuring all the above and a hachée beef and onion stew, plus all the red cabbage, apple sauce and gravy trimmings. Framed photos of mothers and families line the walls, and it’s fair to say that the homey comfort is echoed in the communal, chatty service and gloriously uncomplicated food.

Cheap eats guide to Amsterdam

Admittedly Moeders isn’t the cheapest restaurant in Amsterdam but I think it does represent the most value for money and not just in terms of the portion size, which are bigger than the average person’s head. Moeders, being Dutch for “mothers” serves up traditional, home-cooked Dutch cuisine with a little flair, a funky atmosphere and a lot of love, beaming down on you from all four walls of the restaurant that are covered in photos of “mothers”. In fact, you can take a framed photo of your own mother to add to their collection, which they welcome.
