The waterfront “beach bar” Pllek is a popular spot here; built out of old shipping containers, the soaring, dual-level space has an industrial vibe, with corrugated-metal walls warmed by bright artwork, an indoor fireplace, and huge windows looking out over the IJ River. But it’s the man-made beach that draws crowds in warm weather, with comfy beanbags and loungers where you can while away the afternoon. There’s a nice selection of beer and wine; the food is simple but surprisingly good, and it’s crafted with fresh, organic ingredients.

Up in trendy Amsterdam Noord, Pllek – the product of a recycled warehouse and various shipping containers – is a bar, man-made beach, and restaurant that also hosts outdoor summer film screenings and live electronic music. Hop on the free ferry at Amsterdam Centraal to reach this throbbing hang out and settle in with a couple of beers or a glass of rosé while you dig your toes into the sand. When the sun goes down, retreat under the disco ball in the huge industrial-chic space with rows of windows overlooking the IJ river.

Hop on a free, five-minute ferry departing behind Centraal Station to reach the string of riverfront venues at the former derelict shipyard NDSM. Befitting its location in the former shipyards of the newly hip NDSM area, this quirky restaurant is housed in a series of cavernous shipping containers—it attracts a young, lively crowd that appreciates the organic meat and vegetables and sustainably caught fish and seafood. In summer, the huge terrace and sandy man-made beach along the river turn into a party with DJs.

Everybody’s still got a soft spot for Noorderlicht, but Pllek is now officially the place to be. And surprisingly, not only when the sun is out. It’s certainly the heart of almost every festival at NDSM these days, but they’ve got their own program of movies, yoga, etc., that keep people coming back year round.

Sitting right on the banks of the River IJ in NDSM, it’s possible that Pllek is one of the best-located drinking spots in Amsterdam. It may just look like a stack of shipping containers piled haphazardly on the edge of the shipyard because that is essentially what it is, but step inside and you’ll find an airy, industrial-chic interior with furniture made from salvaged shipping and maritime junk. Step out through its glass facade and you’ll find yourself on a man-made beach, complete with sun loungers and picnic benches, giving you the impression that you’re on the Costa Del Amsterdam.

Look no further than this urban beach that has it all: Pllek’s a waterfront bar with pristine sandy spots to lay out your towel or lie back in a deck chair, and stunning skyline views of Amsterdam as you swim. Frequented by trendy Amsterdammers, this cultural hub that’s part of the NDSM Wharf, has been fashioned out of industrial shipping containers. Now, it’s a part-beach and part-live-music venue that serves all-day sustainable tapa-size dishes to share.

A few minutes from Noorderlicht, Pllek is just as good for a summer’s day of drinking in the sun, but it also has a beach… The old-shipping-containers-turned-bar all add to NDSM’s unique, quirky, colourful look. Plus there’s a Crane Hotel right next door!. Step inside the big metal box, grab a drink from the bar and pull up a deck chair on the man made beach by the river IJ, order some food too if you’re hungry as the dishes here are absolutely delicious.

It’s not the closest terrace to PREMIER SUITES Amsterdam but no list of the best terraces in Amsterdam would be complete without a mention of Pllek in Amsterdam Noorde. Catch the free ferry heading from behind Amsterdam Central and enjoy a short stroll along the waterfront to Pllek, the cities biggest al fresco watering hole. Not so much a terrace as an entire beach, Pllek is where trendy locals gather when the sun is low and the wind is warm.

Commandeering an abandoned dock, Pllek is where Amsterdam’s industrial past meets its eco-conscious future. The kitchen serves up sustainable delights that would make Mother Nature herself nod in approval, with 75% of the menu vegetarian (and 25% of that vegan). Honest-to-goodness sand is scattered across its waterfront terrace, where you can salute the sun in a sunrise yoga session or simply watch the IJ river traffic glide on by.

One of my favorite drink spots in Amsterdam, Pllek is a water-side bar/restaurant serving food and drinks from 9am till 3am. This laid back beach-side bar is located in the north of Amsterdam, easily accessible by passenger ferry which departs from the back of Centraal Station. The best thing about Pllek is the location – it has unrivalled views over the River IJ and has plenty of bean bags, hammocks and benches facing the water.

Hop on the ferry to NDSM-wharf, which departs behind the Centraal Station, for a little trip over to “the secret side of Amsterdam.” Once there, follow the signs to Pllek across the industrial terrain. Sounds like quite an undertaking for a plate of deep-fried balls but it’s well worth the effort. Pllek is constructed of a jigsaw of disused shipping containers and boasts a little beach with a wonderful view across the IJ.

Board the ferry across the IJ from Central Station and find a table on the urban beach of the industrial hotspot Pllek. If you catch a ferry ride from Central Station to NDSM Island, you might just happen upon the popular offbeat scene right on the (manmade) beach: Pllek. The Ruige Rakkers, the creative children’s programme at this hotspot, offers a series of free activities from 13:00 to 17:00. One of the worst-kept ‘secret places to eat in Amsterdam’ is Pllek in NDSM-Werf. To get there you need to catch one of the free ferries from Amsterdam Centraal to NDSM-Werf; what used to be a shipyard but is now a very hip area with lots of street art and some groovy restaurants, cafes, shops and accommodation. Pllek is one of my favorite restaurants in Amsterdam Noord (North). Pllek is by the river IJ and offers one of the few urban beaches in town. I like to take my friends from abroad here for lunch and often crash here after festivals or after visiting the flea market IJ-hallen (click here to read my blog post on the largest flea market in Europe: de IJ-hallen).

It is located in NDSM, an industrial hotpots that is a home to art exhibitions, cultural happenings and PLLEK restaurants.People living nearby comes here on the weekend to hangout at the small beachfront area and swim in the River. If you want to enjoy good music along with decent beer and burger then go ahead it’s a best beach in Amsterdam for this purpose.

Just a 20-minute ferry ride from Centraal Station, Pllek will give you the feeling of a beach holiday. The front of the restaurant opens to a beautiful view of the IJ, with picnic tables and the beach. The space also hosts music, parties, films and a variety of cultural activities like outdoor films, art exhibits, kids programs, morning yoga and Tai Chi.

There are a couple of official outdoor swimming spots - including the city beach at Pllek in Amsterdam North - but for those who aren’t too keen on the idea of swimming in the IJ or the Amstel don’t worry, there are plenty of public swimming pools for you to choose from.

For something a little different, jump on board the free ferry over to Pllek, a restaurant within a warehouse on a stretch of sand. The vibes are chill and the food is good. If you’re after a dinner on the fancy side, Pompstation is hard to beat.

Whilst Pllek started off as a pop-up/temporary concept in 2012, it’s grown to become one of the most popular spots in the north of Amsterdam – especially in summer, as it boasts a city beach as well!

The main fireworks over the city can be seen from anywhere by the IJ, including Pllek or the free park across the water near Westerdoksdijk. That said, you can see plenty of fireworks …everywhere.

Pllek is the place to be for people in search of beachy vibes. Here they love animals, green and live music. Chill out in the sun with a plant-based or biological snack and a craft beer.
