What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
RIJKS offers an experimental and flavorful dining experience, with many praising the creative dishes and elegant presentation. While some find the vegetarian menu superior, others highlight the signature dishes as exceptional. However, inconsistencies in service and music choices have been noted, leading to mixed feelings for some diners seeking a flawless Michelin-starred experience.
"Fabulous lunch on a Sunday afternoon at Rijks. We had the lunch set menu + wine pairing and some additional dishes. The wine pairing perfect with the food. The dishes were beautifully presented, well thought through and balanced. The sweetbreads were absolutely delicious with a South African Syrah as a pairing. The staff are attentive and the overall service excellent. kudos to the kitchen."

"If possible, we would have rated 3.5 stars, not quite 4, not quite 3.
RIJKS offers a very experimental and flavorful dining experience with unique tastes. We tried both the vegetarian and classic menus, and found the vegetarian option to be the better choice.
The highlight of the evening was the signature dish, which was absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, the other dishes didn't quite meet this standard.
The surroundings are beautiful, but we had hoped for a more historic atmosphere given the association with the Rijksmuseum. Similarly, the choices of music seem a bit confusing ranging from “Harvest Moon” and Disco Funk to Electronic Chill.
We have previously dined at the Chef's other restaurant, Wils, which we enjoyed much more. Hence, overall, we left feeling a bit disappointed."

"Are you kidding me? This is a Michelin-starred restaurant?! Easily the worst one I’ve ever been to. The food was disappointing—mostly Western dishes mixed with Chinese sauces, which didn’t work for me. But the real shocker was the lack of service.
We arrived a bit earlier than our 11:30 reservation. They weren’t open yet, which we understood—but when it suddenly started raining, we asked if we could wait inside. They said no, as they weren’t ready yet. No one offered any alternative or showed basic hospitality. A few minutes later, when the rain had already stopped, they told us we could come in to wait. Like… what’s the point? Thank you?
During the meal, no one checked on our table. When a server cleared our plates, she dropped my friend’s utensils onto her chair while my friend was in the washroom—then picked them up without cleaning the chair. After we finished eating, our empty dishes sat there for over 5 minutes with no one in sight.
Then a fruit fly started circling. My partner killed it (photo attached), and when we pointed it out to the server, she just said there was nothing they could do—no apology, no gesture, just dropped off the bill.
They did waive one dish from the bill, but that’s not what we were asking for. Was a simple apology really that hard?
Definitely would not recommend this place!"

Restaurants in Amsterdam
Amsterdam's famed Rijksmuseum displays a dazzling collection of Dutch masterpieces, and the adjacent restaurant, with an understated Japandi-style decor, shares a similar lofty goal: to create edible art using as many Dutch-produced or -influenced products as possible. This means the vegetable-heavy menu of mainly small plates may feature such delights as red cabbage gazpacho, celeriac with hazelnut miso, and the signature mille-feuille of beetroot with soy-infused beurre blanc and parsley oil. Order à la carte or go for one of the Chef's Menus (the latter is compulsory on busy Friday and Saturday night) but well worth it.
The Ultimate Travel Guide to Amsterdam’s Gardens: Where to Stay, Where to Eat, and What to See
RIJKS not only has an impressive culinary pedigree, but a cultural one too: the restaurant is situated in a wing of the Rijksmuseum, the great museum of Dutch Golden Age art (and much more beyond) where you can take in the masterpieces of Rembrandt and Vermeer. Still, RIJKS wears these highbrow associations lightly. Despite the elegant trappings of its dining room, there is a relaxed feel to the proceedings, which are specifically designed with the idea that you might need to kick back a little after traipsing around a museum for hours.

The Rijks, being the restaurant of the Rijksmuseum, received its first Michelin star in 2016. Here, Dutch cuisine is inspired by ingredients grown in the Netherlands, while making use of international flavours that have influenced the Dutch culture and cuisine across centuries. Best location to AIRBNB in Amsterdam
Near Vondelpark is nice, anywhere around the Jordaan area (the area surrounding the Anne Frank house) is beautiful but more expensive, and even further out than the Rijks wouldn't put you too far away (or north of the city for that matter). I wouldn't stay near the actual center (the "red light district"), mostly because its more trafficked and dirty. I like to ride a bike into the center for sites like the Old Church in the Attic (highly recommend) or the Oude Kerk.

5 local restaurants to dine at in Amsterdam

When the restaurant opened in the autumn of 2014, in a wing of the Rijksmuseum, it attracted a lot of attention. The Rijksmuseum, the showcase for every Dutch master from Rembrandt to Vermeer, is a national treasure house, and the debut of its namesake restaurant was a major culinary statement.

The Best Restaurants in Amsterdam
One of the better casual fine dining spots in Amsterdam serving uncontroversial fare with the odd moment of brilliance. Despite now having a star, if you come here expecting Michelin-style food you may well be disappointed. Irrespective, it stays high on my list of recommendations in town, especially for those looking for good price/quality, in a very central location, and where it’s usually possible to get a table.
