A bit of a Rotterdam classic and loved by tourists and locals alike, Bokaal should be part of any self-respecting Rotterdam bar crawl. If you venture from there to the little shopping area behind the market square on Nieuwemarkt you will find Bokaal, a gastropub with one of the largest outdoor patios in Rotterdam. The beer list is somewhat traditional, but you’ll find a few interesting craft beers. A short walk from there is the popular shopping street Meent and another beer bar Haagse Bluf that also serves good bar food.

For one, it’s located in a beautiful square in one of my favorite areas of the city (that is NOT Witte de Withstraat, shocking I know) with a large tree-covered, shaded patio. Bokaal also appeals to anyone, serving a variety of specialty craft beers, nice wines, good coffee, small bites to share, and individual entrees. The music is good, and the interior decor is both modern and rustic.

Bokaal used to be my favourite terrace in Rotterdam, as it was located close to my first place in Rotterdam. Bokaal is easy to reach from Blaak station and is very popular with the Friday Afterwerk Socials when many citizens gather for a beer. Their beer menu is not very excessive and special, but they do serve something suited for you.

With their lovely terrace, it is a nice bar to go to in the summer months. But even in winter you can easily go to Bokaal, thanks to their heated terrace. It is a typical bar but with a contemporary edge, with many wooden and brown details without it appearing dusty or old.

A typical location for Friday afternoon drinks (“vrijmibo”) for young Rotterdam professionals, situated close to Blaak station. It’s always crowded at Bokaal and the there’s always a nice vibe. There are not many table inside, but the enormous terrace compensates for that.

One of the cosy cafés that Rotterdam has is of course Bokaal. A place where you can sit in the sun, with a cold beer in one hand and a snack in the other. But, if it suddenly starts to rain, they have enough awnings and umbrellas here to keep you dry.

And they serve good food and beers too, so chances are you won’t want to leave anytime soon. They have a varied beer selection and sometimes even have their own brew on tap. The Bokaal #1 saison is one of the best local saisons I’ve tried!
