Reviews Summary

Diners rave about the exceptional quality and freshness of the baklava, particularly the pistachio variety, describing it as a unique and unforgettable experience. While some find it a bit pricey, most agree that the taste and the overall atmosphere make it well worth the indulgence. The vast selection and traditional setting contribute to its iconic status.

"I visited Güllüoğlu recently with my husband, and honestly, it’s unlike any other place I’ve been to before. The photo shows what we tried, and I have to say, it’s easily one of the best sweet treats I’ve ever had.

I’ve tried lots of desserts from various well-known places, but this one really stood out — not just because of the taste, which was absolutely brilliant, but also because the whole atmosphere is fantastic. The location is great too, making it a proper experience rather than just a quick snack.

The prices aren’t cheap, but considering the quality and the whole vibe, it’s definitely worth it if you fancy treating yourself. If I want to spend quite a bit on really good quality again, this is definitely where I’d come back to."

Emine Demir

"Exceptional Baklava! Truly one of a kind. If you’re ever in Istanbul and happen to have a sweet tooth, don’t miss out on this place! Everything was so good and the service was excellent. We had to wait a bit for coffee so they offered us free tea🤭
Only downside is some chairs outside have no back and it made sitting super uncomfortable."

Sarra Fki

"It’s expensive but one of a kind experience. The desserts are delicious, fresh and exceptional. The service is fast. There is plenty of space both inside and outside. Backyard seating area is very nice. All staff speak English. So it’s very convenient for ordering. There are English menus everywhere, even at the entrance. The prices are clear.
The toilets are clean and they have nursery room for infants."

The Best Places To Get Mouth-Watering Baklava Treats In Istanbul

Speaking of the devil, Güllüoğlu is probably the most well known producer of baklava in Istanbul and has stores all over the city. However, you have to keep in mind that the Güllüuğlu family has many members, and only a few Güllüoğlu branches still produce the kind of baklava that the family’s ancestors would be proud of. The original Güllüoğlu branch in Gaziantep as well as Güllüoğlu in Karaköy are the best places to buy baklava adhering to the traditional techniques and ingredients of a family business that began in 1871.

Making a pit stop at Güllüoğlu while waiting for the ferry to arrive at nearby Karaköy Pier is customary. Open until midnight, Karaköy Güllüoğlu’s baklava comes in original flavours like chocolate, and their sugar-free ‘diabak’ is suitable for diabetics.

Best restaurants in Istanbul for breakfast, lunch and dinner

Istanbul's traditional sweet shops, filled with the scent of rose, ginger and powdered sugar, are places of unbridled joy, displaying elaborate boxes of marzipan, glass jars of rock candies and sugared almonds, lokum (Turkish delight), crystallised fruit rinds and jellies. Often the larger stores double-up as cafes, meaning that you can have a coffee and a sweet treat then buy a box to take away with you. One of the more glamorous spots to do this is at Güllüoğlu located by the new Galataport development in Karaköy, right on the water.

Karaköy Güllüoğlu - best baklava in Istanbul

Karaköy Güllüoğlu is perhaps the most famous baklava place in the world. Its fame is well-deserved as it dishes out countless trays of baklava everyday from the factory-like kitchens where experienced "usta"s (masters) roll out paper-thin phyllo dough, dust in heaping amounts of pistachio and make a crispy on the top, soggy at the bottom baklava. While there are better renditions of the traditional sweet in Antep, the baklava Mecca, Karaköy Güllüoğlu makes without doubt the best baklava in Istanbul.
