A small stone building dating to the 18th century, Grasmere's first shop is now a quirky, family-run restaurant. The food is an eclectic mix of international and traditional British; think porcini mushroom arancini, beetroot and pumpkin ravioli, or Lebanese chicken with clementine and fennel. A dedicated local fan base means the place always buzzes, and the owners' enthusiasm is contagious.

This wonderfully – and aptly – named restaurant, fizzes with energy from the pink and purple velvet cushions to the mis-matched plates to the bluesy music. It’s about as far as you can get from the twee tea-rooms or traditional pubs elsewhere in Grasmere. Food is a refreshing Middle-Eastern spin on Lakeland produce.

In order to eat well, the budget traveller has to accept certain limitations. For instance, you'll have to eat at the Jumble Room at lunchtime, on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Even then, the menu only offers around six dishes at under £10 a head.

Fine dining hit the Lakes decades ago with chefs sending forth amuse-bouches of pea-ice to diners previously content with things dipped in puddles of Hellmann's. There are now as many farmers' markets and food festivals and awards in Cumbria as the Cotswolds and you can eat as daintily or as ethically or locally sourced as you could wish in restaurants and country- house hotels where waiters loom like footmen and crystal glasses are perpetually being raised in appreciation.
