The name Chez Dominique and the menu all scream French but this sophisticated little restaurant is actually run by two Brits from Cambridge, Chris and Sarah, and is named after their first child Dominic. You wouldn’t know it though as the chefs are trained in French cuisine and the restaurant has a European understated elegance – when you walk past and see people happily chatting and clinking glasses in the window, it feels like you could be in Paris. If you’re dining with a party of friends, ask for the room at the back of the restaurant, which is semi-private and has great views over the weir.

I do love French cooking (I often cook hearty, warming dishes like coq au vin and beef Bourguignon at home) and Chez Dominque is a traditional Bistro serving up the best flavors from France and mainland Europe using locally sourced produce from the west of England. There’s a set lunch menu and an evening à la carte with a wide range of dishes from carrot and fennel soup to sea bass, roast cod, Devon duck and chicken, and some delicious desserts such as sorbet and a cheese board.

Across the river in Argyle Street is the cosy family-run enclave Chez Dominique. Owners Chris Tabbitt and Sarah Olivier named their modern French and European restaurant after their first-born child, and their family focus and joy in entertaining is evident in the relaxed ambience and the welcome given to four-legged friends at lunchtime. Hospitality pros Chris and Sarah head-up a gifted team of gastronomic talent, which includes head chef Sam Lewis.
