Despite the prime location on New Street, it’s easy to walk straight past Medicine’s unfussy exterior. Pop inside, however, and you are greeted with a boggling range of sweet and savoury bakes, which could easily be considered a meal on their own. The excellent brunch menu includes traditional and vegan breakfasts, buddha bowls and a mouthwatering grilled cheese sourdough.

Walk into this bakery in the city centre and you’ll be greeted with trays upon trays of baked goods, from baskets piled high with rye loaves and plump sourdough croissants to serried ranks of glossy white chelsea buns, plus brownies, cronuts, cupcakes and more. Make your selection (try the enormous passion fruit cronut – you’ll need two hands to eat it) then tuck in at communal tables in the bakery’s light-filled, grandly proportioned Victorian dining space (it doubles as an art gallery). Medicine is also a great spot for brunch, from masala eggs and falafel tartines to pesto ricotta on sourdough toast.

This unique, artisan bakery-café-gallery is situated on New Street, right next to Victoria Square. Beginning as a swanky bar in Digbeth, curating a vibrant mix of musical genres, the Medicine brand have expanded their reach into the bakery scene to create authentic and unusual bread and cakes. But as well as boasting with their delightful menu (if you haven’t tried a Kruffin or a Cronut yet, get there pronto!), the Medicine Bakery and Gallery also host a series of independent markets and exhibitions, representing a “new format of social space”.

Medicine is an artisan bakery and café and gallery (when open). They have three venues, and we are lucky enough to have not one but TWO in the city centre (one on New street and one in the Mailbox with the other in Wolverhampton. They are the masters of all thing’s coffee and cake! They have it all, but if we were to recommend one thing of the menu it would have to be their Cronuts (Yes,that’s exactly what it sounds like a croissant donut INSANE) with new delicious flavours each week!. They know what their doing!

What:There are two Medicine Bakerys in Birmingham, as well as another couple in Codsall and Wolverhampton, but all are rooted in the bringing together of food and art. Simultaneously a bakery, kitchen, café and gallery, the idea is to offer guests a carefully curated menu of ethically-sourced dishes, while also providing inspiration via art and culture. Our favourite is probably the one on New Street, a calming, foliage-filled Victorian space with long wooden benches and large skylights.

The Medicine Bakery can be found at two locations in Birmingham: one on New Street and the other at the Mailbox. Situated on New Street, in a Victorian building which used to host the Royal Society of Birmingham Artists, is Medicine Bakery. The owners previously owned the famous Medicine Bar in Digbeth and since have been exploring the bakery trade, opening both Medicine Bakery and Kitchen in Wolverhampton and the Medicine Bakery and Gallery here in Birmingham. It’s minimalist and regularly has exhibits and art collections on display in its gallery area.

One busy Saturday afternoon I was enticed by a neon light announcing ‘Bakery + Gallery’ on Birmingham New Street. I escaped upstairs into a new style of artisan bakery, café and gallery. Behind big brown doors lies a beautiful first floor Victorian space, that was previously home to the Royal Society of Birmingham Artists, and today offers a selection of artisan breads, cakes (including cruffins and cronuts) and coffee.

Other bakeries might be popping up on Birmingham's New Street but those who have been in to Medicine, sat in its beautiful dining room for brunch or grabbed a pastry and coffee-to-go, knows how special it is. The lovely space is filled with greenery and a glass ceiling, like a little botanical haven on our busiest street. In January, it'll get a new neighbour as Gail's, the swiftly-growing London chain, moves in.

However, staff should be better trained not to put gluten free products together with gluten baked goods. We ordered over the phone a slice of the matcha raspberry cake and was put together with two other gluten baked goods. Because of cross-contamination my friend couldn't eat it.

This once tiny New Street pop-up has now turned into a cafe offering sweet and savoury treats, but the kronuts, pastries and brownies are what everyone’s talking about. It’s 30 seconds walk from Victoria Square and you can take everything away if your visit is fleeting.

After the closure of the Medicine Bar in 2011, Simon and his wife Francesca discovered a new trade as bakers. After their success in Wolverhampton, they opened another restaurant in 2021. This time inside the in the heart of the city on New Street.
