Set within an exquisitely converted Edwardian rotunda, Shelter Hall is a gloriously vibrant food market, offering a taste of the very best from Brighton and indeed Sussex’s artisanal producers under just one roof. Come here for knock-out live music, fab cocktails or craft beers at their first floor Skylark Cocktail Bar, and of course, sensational sea views. You can either grab a high-end takeaway to munch on the pebbles or settle in either outside or at one of the trestle tables, then pick from the likes of VIP Pizza’s authentic Amalfi creations, Asian salads and noodles from Zest, lip-smacking chicken wings from Lost Boys Chicken – or masterchef-winner, Kenny Tutt’s yummy grilled meats.

Shelter Hall operates out of a rather beautiful seafront building, built in 1888, to allow promenaders to shelter from the rain. After years of neglect, then some serious restoration, it is now a well-administered home to seven kitchens and two bars, brimming with helpful, smiling staff who will bring plates of Neapolitan pizza and Vietnamese-inspired bao to your seaview table.

Alongside banquet-style seating in the stylish hall – which serves food from breakfast to dinner – Shelter Hall has a huge al fresco terrace, plus a large programme of live sessions and DJs.

If you’re coming for the seaside, Shelter Hall is a straight walk down the hill from the station and has a smorgasbord of venues under one roof; grab a table outside in the sunshine (the sun will, of course, be shining) and choose something from several outlets including local pizza legends VIP, or MasterChef winner Kenny Tutt’s Ox Block (local meats cooked on a robata grill). On Hove’s seafront, Rockwater has a large terrace right on the beach and its roof, and its trendy lobster roll and cocktails bring some glamour to the western end of the promenade. If its classic fish & chips you’re after, well, it’s much of a muchness, but Lucky Beach overlooking the pebbles (and more famous for its burgers) does a locally sourced version that is a cut above.

Set within a 15,000 sq ft Victorian building that has been being restored by Brighton & Hove City Council for nearly five years, Shelter Hall Raw is a heavily adapted version of what was originally planned. The pandemic started to hit as the building work commenced early this year necessitating a drastic rethink: the build had to be delivered quicker and for less cash and it also needed to be as COVID-19 proof as possible. The plan is to trade as Shelter Hall Raw until around the end of the year before closing and re-opening as originally envisaged in early 2021, at which point the venue will revert to being simply Shelter Hall.

It features a regularly changing line-up of seven different Sussex-based kitchens that currently includes Kolkati (Kolkata-style egg-fried paratha rolls), Stakehaus (steak and fries by chef Lily Smith), 3Bros Burgers (Sussex wagyu burgers) and Saltio (Mexican street food). The hugely popular walk-in only outdoor terrace is a great spot for some good value al fresco seaside dining but be prepared to wait or book a table on the mezzanine level for equally great sea views.

In our opinion, this is definitely the most unique ‘restaurant’ on this list, or rather Shelter Hall could be described more like seven restaurants in one run by independent chefs and this includes MasterChef winner Kenny Tutt and his Patty Guy burgers. This food market is located on Brighton Beach, offering stunning views of the ocean from both its indoor and outdoor seating making it a must-visit location. Shelter Hall’s unique appeal comes from the ability to order food from multiple restaurants based on preferences.

Brighton’s bright, airy new seafront food hall has had rave reviews – and rightly so. Shelter Hall combines a genuinely fun, stress-free dining experience (there are no queues or scrums for seats; you order using a QR code from your bookable table) with an unbeatable selection of traders: Edinburgh’s Montreal-style Bross Bagels, Neapolitan pizzeria Amalfi and Patty Guy’s burgers are all there. There are plans for regular kitchen residencies too: the latest is Sol, billed as a ‘celebration of Santa Monica cuisine’.

A newer addition to Brighton’s collection of seafront venues, Shelter Hall is a food hall offering food from six different eateries, as well as having a bar for those looking for a drink. The drink prices are a lot closer to what you’d expect on a regular night out (around £8 for a cocktail, pretty standard really), but the crazy amount of food options are a massive draw to this venue. Not to mention they have a lovely outdoor seating area, so you’ll be set to catch the sun and enjoy a bite and a bev.

2023 Review: “If you are happy with a food hall for your meal, then this is a good (but very popular) option” – this year-old venue has a “great location” on the seafront and features seven street-food concepts at a time. In her July 2022 visit, The Guardian’s Grace Dent was also wowed: “The food, with each delivery by a chipper server, continued to be far better than a food hall ever tends to be… we left Shelter Hall jubilant, £60 down for lunch for three people with drinks”.

Shelter Hall, along the seafront, is an indoor food market offering a variety of dishes from 7 different independent stalls. We were greeted at the door and shown to our seats in the downstairs area – the mezzanine level upstairs is off-limits to dogs, though the space is so large and airy that we think downstairs is the better place to be!. There’s a QR code on the table for you to scan, browse the menus and order, and before long a server brought the dishes to our table.

Yes please – Brighton’s Shelter Hall has seven different food kitchens, ranging from bao to burgers, ramen to Pizza plus a couple of cocktail bars and craft beer pop-ups. The street food choice is great but the best bit of Shelter Hall is the awesome beach views, especially from the balcony on the upper deck. You’d do far worse than take ‘Shelter’ here for the day, enjoying drinks and soaking up the sunshine views – open 7 days a week from 10am daily.

Brighton’s only food hall, Shelter Hall by Sessions Market (a business set up by former Deliveroo managing director Dan Warne), enjoys a stellar address on the seafront, smack bang at the centre of Brighton Beach. Diners can expect a side of entertainment with their meal as the concept brings together an electric mix of local chefs, musicians and artists in the landmark Victorian building, which dates to the 1880s.

Shelter Hall only opened its doors in 2021, but it’s already become a go-to destination for foodies. The global pandemic has meant Brighton’s first food hall had a stop-start opening, with Shelter Hall Raw popping up last summer to fill the gap before the real thing opened in April 2021. Just a month in, and it’s already hit its stride. 2018 Masterchef winner Kenny Tutt’s Ox Block is here for his first Brighton venture, serving meat sourced from local farmers and cooked over a robata grill.

What was once a derelict building is now a food court and beer garden. Shelter hall now has a range of food and drink stalls inside, as well as seating both in and out of the hall itself. There are even igloos available if you’re not quite ready to brave the winter winds yet, and the range of pleasantries on offer truly puts this place number one on our list of best outdoor bars in Brighton.

Shelter Hall near the faded West Pier is one of these places. An ornate circular structure, it was built in 1899 as a refuge from the rain.

So it may be no surprise that Shelter Hall Raw was buzzing when it opened on Saturday. The brand new food hall on Brighton seafront provides a collection of the city’s favourite local food businesses all under one roof.

The derelict Shelter Hall (150-154 Kings Road Arches) was built in the 1880s as part of the historic Kings Road Arches and supports the upper promenade at the junction of the A259 and West Street.
