Carrying on the bohemian vibe of the hotel, this place features stripped back walls, cool lighting, and an open kitchen where you can watch the chefs cook up your choice from the three set menus available. Ingredients like summer vegetables sit alongside the quirkier jerk monkfish and nashi pear, meaning you’re never entirely sure what tastes you’ll be experiencing next, just that it will be delicious.

Chef Dan Kenny has relocated his long-running restaurant from the Artist’s Residence hotel to a long-term residency at the bohemian Café Rust, north of the city centre. The move has galvanised the chef’s cooking which is now arguably the most exciting and creative in the city with a new weekly-changing 14-16 course tasting menu centred around ‘big flavours, fat and umami’. A recent meal featured hit after hit dish, with highlights including a wickedly rich and delicious oxtail dauphinoise with oxtail gravy.

The journey itself lasts between two to three hours, and the ingredients used are only the finest available.

Runners-up were The Little Fish Market (technically brilliant modern seafood is the order of the day in this intimate relaxed restaurant), The Set (expect the unexpected with a set menu of dishes that never fail to delight), Dilsk (inventive dishes shine here, with the laminated brioche being particularly swoon-worthy) and Etch (cutting-edge seasonal tasting menus and a very cool basement bar).

Unless you’re dining from the brunch menu, there isn’t an à la carte option as such. Choose from the constantly-changing set lunch menu (2 courses for £34 or 3 courses for £38) or the fabulous Sunday sharer menu. The dishes are creative, exciting and utterly beautiful with the likes of miso pumpkin, lamb and taramasalata, pork belly with scallops and a duck egg custard tart gracing the menu.

The restaurant started its journey as a Halloween pop-up in 2014. It evolved into a highly regarded bricks-and-mortar establishment in the Artist Residence hotel on the seafront, before moving to Preston Park post-pandemic, keeping its relaxed vision and focus on local produce.
