Reviews Summary

Diners rave about BOX-E's exceptional modern British cuisine, with particular praise for the well-balanced tasting menu and standout dishes like scallop soup, trout, and hake. The warm and friendly service contributes to the intimate and cozy atmosphere within the unique shipping container setting. Some minor critiques mention portion sizes for certain elements and occasional toughness in meat dishes, but overall, the value and quality are highly commended.

"A lovely evening at Box E! Each dish of the tasting course was well balanced and flavoursome, the local ingredients really sang through! Would definitely recommend for a special occasion. Service was smooth and very friendly. Absolutely divine wine selection also. The only thing I would say, I stated in my email that it was going to be my birthday the night we were dining, and as a restaurant of this standing, I did expect them to do something to acknowledge that, maybe a candle or gesture at the end of the meal. But regardless it was still a wonderful night!"

"We had a fantastic dinner at Box-E. The food choices were all delicious and they had lovely veggie options for me. The service was perfect, so warm and friendly and happy to answer any questions. Loved it. Would highly recommend"

Natalie Woods

"Taking my mum to Box-E for her leaving meal. It is incredible food and the service was so amazing! Worth for every single penny that I spend. Also, my mum is very picky but she said that this is the best food in the UK that she has ever had before!!! Definitely come back again xx"

The 11 best restaurants in Bristol

BOX-E is snuggly kitted out in the Cargo development of the city’s Wapping Wharf quarter with its ethically sound collection of shops and restaurants all housed in former shipping containers. The restaurant takes up two of them and in the simply decorated surroundings (glass and blonde plywood), chef Elliott Lidstone creates exceptional modern British cuisine. Space dictates everything here – all the ingredients are box fresh and the menu regularly changes – and with seating for just 14 and four people at the counter (for the kitchen table tasting menu, which must be requested in advance) you feel part of something intimate.

Bristol’s Best Date Locations

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to special little restaurants in Wapping Wharf, but Box-E just pips the others on the romantic front. The restaurant itself is teeny (but does spread out a little more on the terrace when the weather is good) so always feels intimate, and for a really memorable evening you should go for the seven course unwritten tasting menu at £55 per person – a matching wine flight is also available for £40 per person. If you don’t manage to nab a table on the date of your choosing, both Tare and Root are excellent, with Tare Bistro also offering some great dishes at a lower price point.

The ultimate A-Z guide to eating out in Bristol's restaurants - Briana Millett

Excellent food, a range of decent wines by the glass or bottle and friendly, knowledgeable service without any pomp or pretence, Box-E may just be a windswept converted shipping container to some, but it possesses virtually every quality I look for when eating out and it’s firmly up there in Bristol’s top division.". That's what Mark Taylor had to say about Box E in a recent review. The cargo restaurant is small, with only 14 covers, but its received a wealth of glowing reviews since it first opened.
