Nestled at the back of a venue more known historically for its subs than its subsistence, Burger Theory at the Golden Lion is amassing a reputation for out-of-this-world fried goods and diner-style cuisine. The Blue Cow (£8.48) has a succulent beef and jalapeño patty lavished in blue cheese and lip smacking tomato relish. The Sheriff (£8.48) has ground bacon in the beef, oak smoked cheddar, onion rings and bourbon BBQ sauce.

Given how much happiness the humble hamburger can spark with just one bite, isn’t it a real shame that it was lacking in good vegetarian alternatives for a really long time?. As the restaurant industry eventually thawed – just like the only frozen veggie patty you could find in 2010 – it became more open to creating with plant-based ingredients in mind. Rory Perriment, however, was way ahead of the curve, starting Burger Theory up in 2012 and taking to the road with their mobile stall to serve delicious, more creative burgers to the masses at fairs and festivals.

Near Baldwin Street and St Nich’s Market the home of the bottomless burger club is a slight trek if you are living in Cotham/Redland but I guarantee you it is worth it. The beef patties are juicy and the fried chicken has a crunch unlike any other I have had the pleasure of munching. The menu is fun and playful, what you would expect coming from a company who proclaim themselves ‘The Creative Burger People’, with many if not most of the burgers featuring blue cheese and pickles.

Burger Theory has been built from the ground up with real grassroots, powered by an insatiable quest for better, fresher and more creative burgers. Founded & started in 2012 by chef Rory Perriment he began experimenting with different recipes inspired by world cuisine and realised he wanted to challenge the boundaries of what can go in a burger.

I think our most out-there burger and one that is very popular is the Korean Fried Chicken burger. It consists of crispy fried chicken marinated in soy ginger and black pepper smothered in chilli and garlic sauce, peanuts, spring onions and fresh chillies. It’s the best because it’s unique to us and can’t be found anywhere else.

This popular pop-up turned restaurant serves up classic burgers, as well as craft beers, cocktails, fresh juices, dirty fries, cheesecakes and plenty more maximalist treats. Burger Theory's menu is family, vegetarian and vegan-friendly, with a relaxed atmosphere and outside space for those odd occasions when the sun is shining.

Before the gig and after a mooch around the St Nicholas Market food stalls, we got our fill at Burger Theory. Our lunch stop the following day, and on the way home would be at Pasta Loco on Cotham Hill.
