An independent modern British eatery, specialising in gourmet sandwiches, poutine and their signature 'bowls' in the heart of historic Cambridge, created and run by local couple Simon and Michelle. Everything is cooked from scratch on-site from locally sourced ingredients, 100% British meats along with homemade mayo’s and sauces, which makes everything taste that little bit more amazing. Serving the City of Cambridge since 2014, the concept was born from the couples love of cooking roasts at home combined with the restrictions of the site, a small 17th Century listed building which could not accommodate large commercial extraction systems - sandwiches were the key - and they had to be the best!

This independent Cambridge cafe is making waves, with a selection of gourmet sandwiches filled with high-quality roast meats, most commonly accompanied by one of their excellent cups of coffee. Quality is definitely the order of the day here, with their dishes available in three versions; ciabatta, poutine or full bowl. With options including porchetta, honey soy chicken, topside of beef and roast vegetables, there’s definitely something for everyone, and there’s also an extensive drinks selection in addition to their ethically sourced organic coffee, with plenty of soft drinks, milkshakes, beers and wines.

Bread & Meat makes very fine sandwiches and serves Monmouth coffee, but if you’re looking for more of an upmarket dining experience, look no further than Margaret’s, a newly opened bistro from the team behind its Michelin-starred neighbour, Restaurant 22. If you’re really looking to push the boat out, make a reservation at Midsummer House, the two-Michelin-starred restaurant on the banks of the river Cam. Set in a Victorian villa, the set lunch (from £105 a head) is a formal affair, with French-inspired flavours, but the service leans friendly rather than fussy.

The Philly cheesesteak on their menu may not be for the purists, but their delightful interpretation captures the flavours and textures of the classic American sandwich invented in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the 1930s. Although their options are relatively limited, what the company does offer is quality in its locally sourced produce, from 100% British meats along with homemade mayo and sauces.

Opened in 2013 by Richard Holmes and Benny Peverelli, this gastropub serves craft brews from the UK and abroad and a great selection of artisan gins and homemade soft drinks – best enjoyed with a pie or hot Scotch egg. The restaurant area offers a more extensive menu, with meat cooked over a charcoal spit roast (try the devilled kebab with marinated pork belly). If you’re in a group, it’s worth keeping an eye on the specials board for any sharing dishes.

Then dip into the nearby Fitzwilliam Museum (free entry) for a dose of culture before heading off to Bene’t Street to Bread and Meat for a hot Porchetta and Salsa Verde sandwich. Husband-and-wife team Simon and Michelle Cheney have set out to produce honest, excellent food, and in sophisticated sandwich shop Bread & Meat, they have succeeded in spades!. Boring sandwiches are not an option here.

Just a few doors down, Bread & Meat’s robust porchetta sandwiches should probably be ordered with a side of poutine. If you’re in the mood for something of a more Italian persuasion, Aromi’s Roman style pizzas can be bought by the slice and devoured on the move. For dessert, head up the road to Jack’s Gelato, where a dizzying array of flavours are available late into the night.

This much-loved British fusion restaurant, situated right in the centre of Cambridge, serves food that you’ll be familiar with… but to an exceptionally high standard. The most ‘shoreditch’ of the Meat Street restaurants, Bread and Meat does what it says on the tin. Serving a selection of 4 delicious sandwiches, or salads, it is a simple and low-key spot which will make your date think you’re from North London. If a bit pricey, you can still eat for less than a tenner – so you can pay if you’re feeling generous.

Bread & Meat is one of the best local restaurants in Cambridge and another of my favorite lunchtime spots. They make the best sandwiches in the city, hands down. The menu at Bread & Meat is very concise and consists of just 5 sandwiches plus one weekly changing special.
