Reviews Summary

Diners rave about the delicious and succulent gourmet sandwiches, with many highlighting the Philly Cheese Steak and Porchetta. The use of fresh, locally sourced ingredients and friendly service are frequently praised. However, some visitors note that the porchetta can be fatty, and seating can be tight due to the shop's compact size.

"An absolute delicious place. Although you're packed in like sardines and there's probably a wait, it's worth the wait too. The soy chicken sandwich is amazing. The chicken is juicy and succulent. The staff are really friendly although so busy it's unbelievable. There's one large table in the middle, then there's the window seats and some seating at the edge. Like I say packed like sardines but so delicious. Well worth a visit"

"I recently had lunch at Bread and Meat and really enjoyed everything. I ordered the Topside of British Beef, and it was delicious. The dish came with cold sliced beef steak and some beautifully presented vegetables – everything looked and tasted great.
The waiter was a very friendly young man and gave excellent service. He made me feel welcome and comfortable. I would definitely go back again and recommend this place to others. was a very friendly young man and gave excellent service. He made me feel welcome and comfortable. "Stumbled upon this place from google maps and the high review ratio and we were definitely not disappointed. Truly excellent food which was so tasty and worth it! The menu is a bit confusing so make sure to double check what you want. Recommend the sandwiches but the poutine is also excellent and the beef gravy made the dish.

Enough seat options for dining in but may have to wait and que during peak hours. Service was quick and nice would recommend for sure and if i’m back in Cambridge I’ll definitely come visit again!"

Cambridgeshire Live

The top 30 restaurants in Cambridgeshire, according to TripAdvisor

An independent modern British eatery, specialising in gourmet sandwiches, poutine and their signature 'bowls' in the heart of historic Cambridge, created and run by local couple Simon and Michelle. Everything is cooked from scratch on-site from locally sourced ingredients, 100% British meats along with homemade mayo’s and sauces, which makes everything taste that little bit more amazing. Serving the City of Cambridge since 2014, the concept was born from the couples love of cooking roasts at home combined with the restrictions of the site, a small 17th Century listed building which could not accommodate large commercial extraction systems - sandwiches were the key - and they had to be the best!

This independent Cambridge cafe is making waves, with a selection of gourmet sandwiches filled with high-quality roast meats, most commonly accompanied by one of their excellent cups of coffee. Quality is definitely the order of the day here, with their dishes available in three versions; ciabatta, poutine or full bowl. With options including porchetta, honey soy chicken, topside of beef and roast vegetables, there’s definitely something for everyone, and there’s also an extensive drinks selection in addition to their ethically sourced organic coffee, with plenty of soft drinks, milkshakes, beers and wines.

Bread & Meat makes very fine sandwiches and serves Monmouth coffee, but if you’re looking for more of an upmarket dining experience, look no further than Margaret’s, a newly opened bistro from the team behind its Michelin-starred neighbour, Restaurant 22. If you’re really looking to push the boat out, make a reservation at Midsummer House, the two-Michelin-starred restaurant on the banks of the river Cam. Set in a Victorian villa, the set lunch (from £105 a head) is a formal affair, with French-inspired flavours, but the service leans friendly rather than fussy.

One Two Culinary Stew shares Cambridge’s best sandwiches

Bread & Meat: Cambridge institution Bread & Meat inevitably springs to mind when craving a satisfying sandwich in the city centre. The Philly cheesesteak on their menu may not be for the purists, but their delightful interpretation captures the flavours and textures of the classic American sandwich invented in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the 1930s. Bread & Meat’s version features British beef brisket, cheese curds, green peppers, onions, homemade roast garlic aioli and optional jalapeños, all layered into an oven-fresh, artisan sourdough ciabatta.
