The Mill is built on the site of an old English feud between two millers. Henry Hazard, a Tory, and C.F. Foster, a Liberal, partook in a lengthy and futile conflict which became infamous throughout the town.

A classy vegan restaurant that appeals to non-vegetarians is Stem and Glory on King’s Street. If you can’t forgo the meat, the Pint Shop gastropub (in the former home of EM Forster, opposite the Arts Theatre) is for you – try its scotch egg, with the bonus of craft beer or artisan gins. Close by, The Senate is a good-quality Mediterranean bistro at medium prices.

I have been coming here at the Mill Pond Pub since 2009 when it was still in different hands. Since the changes, the pub has much improved, and when I’m in the area, I often pop in for a drink. On sunny days, you can pick up take away drinks so you can sip on your beer or wine on the grass at Coe Fenn and watch live on the river go by.

Ok, so The Mill Pub doesn’t have its own beer garden to speak of. It does have the most famous unofficial pub garden in the area, though!. You can take your drink in a plastic cup and sit by the lock or watch the world go by on the green.

But food was very disappointing - bread for sandwiches was so dry and hard, halloumi fries over cooked. Girl at bar needed reminding that one meal was for coeliac. Staff lacked any kind of personality or even a smile.

Mill, the Mediterranean cafe and deli, has become one of the most popular cafes on Mill Road in a very short time. Serving excellent coffee, delicious Greek cakes, pastries, and their huge pancakes are a must-have!
