What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Potted Pig is lauded for its delicious, well-portioned modern British cuisine and warm, engaging service. Diners rave about the unique atmosphere within the former bank vaults, making it a standout dining experience in Cardiff. While most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few mention the temperature being a bit cold or a slight disparity between price and perceived value for certain dishes.
"Food that tastes so good, it makes you smile.
Great restaurant, of the same vein as Great Britain and Alfred the Great. Monumentally Great.
The service was impeccable, friendly and comfortable without being overbearing or intrusive, and all staff smiling, positive, clearly enjoying their work and proud of it too. Very fast on food coming out, and very quick to clear the table. But no element of rushing.
The building itself is an atmospheric redeveloped bank vault, with tealights on the tables and soft orange lighting that illuminates the old brick arches.
I ate the potted pig to start (by far the best potted pig I've tried in Wales, and I try some from a different place, when possible, every time I visit the country), which was served warm with house pickles, each uniquely flavoured and still crisp, a slice of real bread, and a sizeable chunk of butter. For my main, I had the glamorgan sausage, because I'd never had one before and I'm trying to try ALL of the Welsh cuisine as I visit fairly often due to work. They appeared to have been freshly made, and we're absolutely delicious, served with atop some creamy peas and beans, and garnished with my favourite of all the leaves, peashoots. Portion size may appear small at first glance, but this is fresh, high quality, locally grown produce and it is filling. My two courses more than set me up for the rest of my day. A genuinely enjoyable experience in my mouth, and in my mind.
Overall, absolutely recommend it, I think it's my new favourite restaurant in Cardiff! And it'll take a lot to beat them, true story. I'll be back with the other half to see if he agrees 👏👏👏"

"Absolutely fantastic. This is my third time visiting, once for evening meal and twice for roast, this time we tried the sharing roast with lamb, pork and beef. The lamb fell apart, the pork was tender and the beef was just the right amount of pink. Crisp potatoes, perfectly cooked veg, love that it includes cauliflower cheese as most places this is an additional side you have to pay extra for! We got there early so got to enjoy the calm moments before it got busy. Such a beautiful venue, wonderful attentive staff, and probably one of the best roasts iv had. A firm favourite that I will always return to when I visit Cardiff for a weekend."

"Deliciouus! And the atmosphere is also very nice - very elegant decorations. I loved the small pig details. 😜 But I found it to be a bit too cold.
The staff was very friendly and helpful."

Eating Out At Cardiff's 10 Best Restaurants
Sitting pretty in central Cardiff, within a mere 100 metres of Cardiff Castle and the Millennium Stadium, The Potted Pig takes advantage of its historical location to create a unique identity, nestled into a former bank vault underneath the city. Serving a refreshingly ‘concept-free’ menu of predominantly British cuisine – with the occasional incorporation of French and New York influences – the menu at The Potted Pig is constantly evolving in the pursuit of unique flavour and genuinely tasty, carefully crafted dishes. With a lovingly chosen selection of independent wines and an unrivalled bespoke gin collection, why not begin with a tipple before beginning with the titular Potted Pig with toasted sourdough and pickles, followed by a whole seabass with courgette, leek, peas and cockle butter and finishing on a high note with carrot cake and stem ginger ice cream.

I’d liked both the Potted Pig and Purple Poppadom, basically anywhere beginning with the letter P, but after that, choice had seemed limited.

Catch an opera performance at the bayside Millennium Centre, shop through the beautiful Edwardian arcades, taste craft brews at The Potted Pig, cheer on the rugby team at Principality Stadium, or take in works by Renoir, Monet, and Pissarro for free at the National Museum, which is home to the largest collection of Impressionist paintings outside of Paris. Cardiff Castle, meanwhile, is a prime example of the city’s patchwork of influences and cultures. Dating back to 55AD, it was originally a Roman fort that later became a Norman stronghold (the 11th-century Norman keep still stands and has one of the best views of Cardiff at its top). The rest of the castle, built in the 14th and 15th centuries, was completely redesigned in 1866, when a British aristocrat moved in to make it his private home.
