Tucked inside the historic Gamul House, the local brewery Spitting Feathers’ pub, The Brewery Tap, is the place to go for some great brews and tasty snacks. The goal of this pub is to offer guests ‘the widest selection of the best cask ales,’ which means they not only feature their own creations but also those from outside sources, local whenever possible. The award-winning brews are complemented by the incredible dishes served, all of which are made with the freshest seasonal, local ingredients and free from artificial additives.

That afternoon I explore other gourmet places to eat, drink and shop from the Chester trail, stopping for a cup of Earl Grey amid the hushed reverence of the library at the Chester Grosvenor hotel, and then a pint of Cheshire Cat at the Brewery Tap, a real-ale pub set in an old Jacobean hall.

The used grains from the brewery are a valuable feed for the pigs that provide the brewery and their pubs (The Brewery Tap in Chester and The West Kirby Tap on the Wirral) with their delicious pork. Beehives also provide honey for the pubs and seasonal beer, Honey Trap, and small amounts of hops are also grown on the farm for use in occasional speciality beers. Driven by their enthusiasm for great beer and good times, Spitting Feathers has continued to grow and evolve into a forward-thinking brewery, producing some of the best beers in Cheshire and beyond.

As part of the Spitting Feathers family of venues, Brewery Tap also offers tipplers a taste of the past thanks to its location within the historic Gamul House. Located close to the Bear and Billet, your crawl will take less time, and no matter your condition, when you arrive, you’ll find eight hand-pulls and eight keg lines delivering an excellent selection of beers and ciders. Five of these beers are award winners, so do test them all out to make sure the judges did their jobs!

This traditional English pub resides in the Gamul House, which dates back to the 16th century and the original brick and fireplace can be seen behind the bar!. If you come here, you’ll be having your delicious dinner where King Charles I stayed in 1645, during the Battle of Rowton Moor!. Aside from the hundreds of years of history that grace this place, many reviews praise the Brewery Tap for its great selection of beer, its tasty ale pies and for being a dog-friendly pub!

If you're looking for something more modern than The Cross Keys but with an equally impressive drinks selection then look no further than The Brewery Tap. This trendy bar is located within walking distance of the city centre and offers an extensive range of craft beers including several brewed on-site at their microbrewery. The Brewery Tap has an industrial-chic design with exposed brick walls, metal light fixtures, and plenty of seating both inside and out on the terrace.

In a great location in Chester city centre you will be able to find some beers that you wouldn’t get in any other Chester pubs!

There’s not much to say about Sticky Walnut that hasn’t already been said by its owner and cult Twitter star Gary Usher. But amid all the entertaining online banter and crowdfunding drives (to launch spin-offs Hispi, Burnt Truffle, Wreckfish and the new Pinion), it’s easy to forget how exceptional this bistro is. Located on the edge of Chester city centre, it’s a model restaurant from its affable staff to its assured, intelligent food.

A Jacobean hall from the 1600s which once gave hospitality to King Charles I before a battle in the Civil War. Previously owned by the Gamuls, a wealthy merchant family of Chester, this pub now boasts the best selection of cask ales in town. And the grub is good too, freshly prepared and from local growers and suppliers – these guys take pride in their hospitality and it’s a definite consideration if you’re after a hearty meal.

A former Jacobean banqueting hall, owners Spitting Feathers Brewery won a CAMRA English Heritage Conservation and Conversion to Pub Use award in 2009. Charles I stayed in the Grade II listed building in 1645 and, behind a perspex panel, part of the original wall can still be seen. Reached by fifteen steps from the street, this city centre pub's stone floors, high ceilings and tapestries create a terrific ambience.

For students who enjoy a more laid-back setting with a great selection of cask ales and craft beers, The Brewery Tap is a must-visit. This cozy pub offers a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for students who want to enjoy a pint with friends without the loud bustle of a typical nightclub. Located near the River Dee, it’s a great spot for enjoying a drink while soaking in Chester’s charming riverside views.

The beer comes from Neil's other business, Chesters Beer Company, which makes a range of craft beer including Northgate Bitter, which he supplies to a number of other venues across the city, including Alexander's, the Brewery Tap and the Moxy Chester hotel. Neil brews around 5-600 litres a week and his is the only brewery in the country to sell beer made without any chemicals.

The neighbourhood late-night party chain on Foregate Street is always a popular stop for any night out in Chester. The stylish, modern interiors offer comfortable seating and plenty of private hire areas for a relaxed but fun night. Vodka is their speciality, with three bars including one dedicated to vodka out back for lovers of the drink to enjoy.

A brief stroll leads me to The Brewery Tap Chester, managed by Spitting Feathers. This stunning Grade II listed structure was once the residence of Charles I in 1645. Ascending a few steps into the bar reveals an impressive interior featuring lofty ceilings, stone flooring, and decorative tapestries adorning the walls.

The Brewery Tap is the perfect place to unwind for food and drink with your dog after a long walk down the river.

The Brewery Tap on Lower Bridge Street did not disappoint us and we would end up returning to it on the following evening too. For this first night in Chester we made do with a couple of drinks and some crisps from the bar because we weren’t in the mood for anything more.

Formerly Gamul House, the home of a wealthy Chester merchant family, parts of the building date back to the medieval period. Refronted in brick in the late 17th century as a precaution against fire, the building has had a variety of uses.

Located on Lower Bridge Street in the city centre, the Brewery Tap has a stunning Jacobean interior with high barrel-vaulted ceilings. Regular drinks include Spitting Feathers, Thirstquencher and Special Ale and five changing beers.
