Reviews Summary

Leonard's Coffee House is praised for its cozy atmosphere and delicious coffee, with many highlighting their fluffy pancakes and unique brunch options like haloumi and avocado sourdough. However, some diners have noted that the service can be slow, particularly during busy periods, and there have been specific complaints about changes to classic dishes like Eggs Benedict.

"(Late March) Great experience overall, really good pancakes with good portions in reasonable prices. Friend ordered the French Toast which was great as well. Appreciate that they seem to use local milk for drinks (Acorn Dairy). Atmosphere is generally quite chill, bright and comfy on the upstairs floor. Was concerned with the service speed at first when reading through other reviews, but in our case the food and drinks were served relatively quickly even though it was quite busy the day we went. Overall recommended!"

"One of the nicest coffee houses in Durham. Lovely local business with freshly made baked goods and brunch options. Haven't ate here since being diagnosed with coeliac, so not sure what the gluten-free options are like. Their food was incredible a few years ago, and looks just as good now! The coffee is excellent and service was great."

"Was a little concerned when I read some TripAdvisor reviews stating slow service. But, I found wait times were pretty good. If you want food thrown at you in 3 minutes stick to your McDonald's Mcmuffins. This is quality food with an unusual twist on the menu. The 2 guys in the small kitchen are knocking out great food. Service was good and with a smile. I'm glad we found this place for out last breakfast in Durham. It didn't disappoint It a little tucked away but well worth the visit."

Down in Fowler's Yard – a hub of craft and designer workshops, also home to the Hill Island microbrewery – Leonard's keeps the local creatives, students and shoppers in coffee and cake. A simple and uncluttered space, with bright, friendly staff and jazz meandering soothingly in the background, it is a good place to ease yourself into the day, over a breakfast of scrambled eggs on a hot buttered muffin (£3.25) and a pot of Teapigs tea (from £1.30). A tester doorstep slice of rarebit was a little unorthodox (red onion and cherry tomatoes?), but laudable for having clearly been made by grating cheese and binding that with milk, seasoning well and adding a good dollop of wholegrain mustard.

7 Best Cafes in Durham

I feel like Leonard’s is a proper hidden gem and probably my favourite café in Durham after stumbling upon it in Fowler’s Yard. Open from Wednesday to Sunday, this is a little cosy and friendly café where you’ll find homemade cakes and scones, breakfast stotties and a good selection of drinks. On my first visit, I went with a pretty standard Flat White but there’s plenty to choose from; the hot chocolates look amazing.
