This light-filled Swedish café and bakery has a generous outdoor seating area (they provide blankets in the winter) where you can watch cyclists collide with pedestrians on Middle Meadow Walk while you sip your coffee. You might opt for open crayfish sandwiches or one of the cardamom buns that have achieved cult status, but there are also generous salads, wood-fired sourdough pizzas and some of the best ice cream in Edinburgh. It isn’t the cheapest café in town, but those buns really do live up to their reputation.

Founded in 2007, Söderberg is a well-loved Edinburgh-based Swedish café chain with a total of three cafes and three bakery shops. They specialise in authentic Swedish, high quality food including open sandwiches, bread, pastries and cakes in Scandinavian-inspired spaces. They are heavily inspired by what you’d typically find in a Swedish kitchen, and their skilled bakers use only the best ingredients – from Valrhona chocolate in our Kladdkaka (chocolate cake) to organic Shipton Mill flour in our sourdough loaves.

As promised by the menu’s purple prose, it’s the best vegan pho I’ve had in Scotland: delicately spiced and as nourishing as an autumn walk through the Meadows. The noodles are flat and slippery, and I love the panoply of proteins, tofu, mushrooms, spring onions, coriander and tiny fronds of crispy shallot. Nevertheless, I would be lying if I said it was as good as the beef one I had two years ago in Non Viet Hai.

This pizza van's usual pitch is on Meadows Place, which is perfect if you want to eat your Surf and Turf (bacon wrapped prawns, pesto and mozzarella) or buffalo chicken wings, celery and vegan blue cheese sauce while sitting on a bench or the grass. Near the greenery of The Meadows, the Cloisters Bar is housed in an old parsonage, while next to Haymarket station, you can drink in the Edwardian splendour of Ryrie’s Bar. Around the corner, behind a narrow shop front, you’ll find the Wee Vault, where you can sample a wide range of Vault City Brewery’s sour beers.
