Reviews Summary
Diners rave about The Outsider's stunning views of Edinburgh Castle and its creative, high-quality European-style cuisine, especially highlighting the mussels and steaks. The restaurant is praised for its excellent value, particularly the lunch menu, and its modern, welcoming atmosphere. While service is generally attentive, some reviews note potential delays during peak times.
"Came here twice, once for dinner alone and once for lunch with my friend. Really great and creative menu. Highly recommend. The OG recommendation came from our hotel front desk and I see why! Great view of the castle too. Def recommend the mussels and everything pictured. Had to look up what those mounted things were… they are heaters!"

"Our dinner at The Outsider was flawless from start to finish. The atmosphere is modern and welcoming, and the view of Edinburgh Castle from our table was absolutely breathtaking — reason enough to visit on its own.
We ordered the rib eye steak with lemon, garlic butter and black pepper, served with hand-cut chips and a rocket, parmesan & tomato salad – everything was cooked to perfection and beautifully balanced. We also had the steamed mussels, which were incredibly fresh and full of flavor. Every dish exceeded our expectations.
What truly elevated the experience, however, was the exceptional service from Aida. From the moment we arrived, she greeted us with a warm smile and made sure we felt genuinely welcome. Her attention to detail, thoughtful recommendations, and kind attitude turned a great dinner into a truly special evening.
Thanks to Aida, this meal became one of the highlights of our trip to Edinburgh. If you’re lucky enough to be looked after by her, you’ll know exactly what we mean. Between the delicious food, stunning views, and outstanding hospitality, The Outsider is a must-visit.
We can’t wait to return!"

"Amazing food, stunning views (if your by the window) busy place with fast service and great value for the price (lunch time visit)
Bookings are by phone only. So we chanced it rocking up towards the start of service hoping to get squeezed in. (Edinburgh at the fringe is busy).
The menu has hand written additions/specials, some bin end wines to take advantage off. Pictured is the venison foccaccia, chargriiled pork, whitebait and the buckwheat pancakes)
One of my favourite meals in Edinburgh"

The Outsider has been sitting in its prime location for twenty years. Very cool when it opened, it is less trendy these days and oft-forgotten but reliably pleasurable – thanks in no small part to its enchanting views out the back window. Wine is also expertly executed here, with red, white and Champagne lovers all catered for.

The Best Restaurants in Edinburgh
It’s a buzzing scene within this restaurant, a rare meeting ground between the city’s students, young professionals and date nights. With a down-to-earth menu, in which the day’s specials are scribbled underneath the usual offerings, and a relaxed and sophisticated ambiance, the Outsider is something of a badly kept secret amongst those who live there. A recommendation to one of the best restaurants in Edinburgh is whispered, not screamed.

Stuart Ralston’s New Town follow-up to Aizle combines a “cool, NY-style vibe with Asian-inspired plates” (and is named after a former NY roomate of his); by all accounts it’s a “fun place to be” (if “a little dark as a space”), particularly for those who “love small plates” that are “absolutely delicious” too (“you could feel the care and passion from the kitchen”).
