Reviews Summary

Timberyard offers a unique fine dining experience in a stylish, industrial-chic warehouse setting, praised for its creative use of local ingredients and attentive service. While many rave about the exceptional food and atmosphere, some find the wine selection limited or the portion sizes small for the price, and a few have noted inconsistencies in service. However, the restaurant's commitment to hospitality and culinary innovation often leads to memorable visits, with many considering it a must-visit in Edinburgh. Reddit+7

"Best Michelin star restaurant I’ve been to! Everything was exceptional especially their friendly and accommodating service. They make everything in-house which made the experience interesting since I really appreciated the effort and thoughtfulness they put in every dish! And all the proteins was cooked to perfection. I rarely get taken away from eating but this was a memorable experience I cherished! I didn’t regret any ounce of penny i spent, since every dish had a story behind it. I recommend their drinks pairing with the tasting menu aswell especially when they have good relationship with their suppliers aswell as procuring small vineyards! Well done 🤙🏾"

"Cool concept and nice attention to detail. Service team was on top of it. Lots of love for Seasonal and Regional ingredients. A dining experience but at the same time not too much or too stuffy. Not the formulaic Michelin Star restaurant. Wine list was comprehensive without being overcrowded. Only minor critique might be the volume of the music at times. We had a great time, thank you!!"

Kon N.

"A really nice place, a kind of stylish but also rustic. And the food is really delicious, the lunch menu allows a selection of various options. Especiallly the starter (lion‘s mane) and the dessert made me happy. A really nice fine dining option in Edinburgh."

32 Best Restaurants in Edinburgh, from Michelin Stars to Sandwich Shops

In a beautifully converted, Scandi-inspired, and candlelit brick warehouse just a few minutes from the Grassmarket, you’ll find some of the most exciting food being cooked in Edinburgh. With a focus on ingredients from small, local growers and suppliers and Nordic flavors, Timberyard’s menu is fresh, seasonal, simple, and utterly delicious. A meaty bass is served with mussels, sea beet, and a hum of vermouth; caramelized pork belly sits alongside buttery cabbage, kimchi, and salted apple; and the roasted pink fir potatoes in a rich shallot herby glaze are some of the best spuds you'll ever try.

The Best Restaurants in Edinburgh

Tucked away near the famous Edinburgh Castle is one of the city’s finest restaurants, easily identified by its bright-red doors. Once a warehouse for storing theatre sets, the restaurant has retained a certain visual rusticity which pairs well with the clean, no-nonsense cooking that extracts big flavours from just a few ingredients; there is certainly no small amount of skill involved in creating understated dishes that are so impressive. The wide-ranging wine list contains plenty to please fans of natural and low-intervention options.Looking for somewhere to stay in the Old Town?

Visitors always leave Timberyard amply impressed, as it really couldn’t be any hipper!. Set in a sleek industrial warehouse, complete with arty exposed brick and carefully selected furnishings, this family-run extravaganza of an eatery champions local artisan producers, growers, breeders and suppliers. For days that demand outdoor dining and boozy lunches, the south-facing sun trap of a yard is delightfully unrefined, yet stylistically seamless.

The 41 best Edinburgh restaurants

The Radford family at Timberyard were early adopters of Scottish-Nordic cooking, and today they continue to re-purpose ingredients to great effect without ever lapsing into preciousness. Try the mutton tartare, with sorrel, egg yolk, and smoked oil, and you’ll forever scorn the steak version. The cleverly converted former warehouse is surprisingly intimate, with a wood-burning stove and rugs for winter and a sunny courtyard for summer.

The Best Restaurants in Edinburgh

Located in an old and seemingly scrawny warehouse, with a vivid red door dominating most of the shop front, you’d be forgiven thinking Timberyard looked less like a high-end restaurant and more like a hipster dive bar for the city’s students. But keep up, this is 2024: industrial-chic is in, and Michelin-awarded Timberyard is leading the charge. One of the five Michelin-starred restaurants in the city, and only one of two within the city center, Timberyard strays from the traditional Scottish palette and offers up a seasonal menu that combines a Nordic approach with some French elements for a thoroughly enjoyable dining experience.

The restaurant is located in a former warehouse with simple decor and a wood burner, evoking a rustic and industrial — yet cosy – ambiance that adds to its innovative character. Best Restaurants In Edinburgh Scotland 2025

Opened in 2012, the Radford family’s funky warehouse bar-restaurant was a game changer. In its stripped-back aesthetic and foraged ingredients, low-intervention wines and homemade soft drinks, it was an early example of that post-Noma shift away from bells and whistles luxury, to an emphasis on seasonality, simplicity and artisan skills. Timberyard retains that cutting edge and, last year, the kitchen’s inspired use of the Scottish larder (lobster gougère and fermented tomato; aged guinea fowl and bolted greens with smoked yogurt and wild garlic) was rewarded with a Michelin star.

This family-run restaurant is housed in an austere warehouse and while, yes, there is a focus on pickling and foraging, none of that Womble-ing gets in the way of the food being outright delicious.
