Had I known just how strong the drinks would be at The Potting Shed, the 1920s-inspired speakeasy complete with password and secret door, I may have swerved the two pints prior, but then again, knowing me, I may not have. The very classic cocktails are crafted with top-notch ingredients – you won’t find any pornstar martinis or spicy margs here – but the old-fashioned flourishes feel fun rather than contrived. There’s even a little theatre when our barman swirls the vermouth around the glass tableside only to chuck the excess straight on the floor.

Owners Ben and Lucy Cuthbert, who are also behind a number of other successful pubs and restaurants in the town (such as the Harbour Inn next door, the Pullman and Luben’s), have done a marvellous job of bringing this place back to life following the closure of Gillespie’s during the pandemic. I know from conversations with the team behind the refit how much effort went into the transformation. That hard work really has paid off.

What : This lovely Kentish pub hidden on a Folkestone side street has a reputation for fine feasting and warm hospitality. Not only will you receive warm and friendly service, you'll feel cosy and toasty inside too as the fire is located conveniently next to the bar to keep you snug while you drink. And, if it's a Sunday and you really want to warm your cockles, you can get a cracking roast here too.

Lucy and Ben Cuthbert, the power behind The Pullman, Lubens, Market Square and The Harbour Inn have been thinking of their own food market since taking over the Market Square building. The basement area lends itself to such a project. Managed by Lucy and Josh Cottingham they spoke to Folkelife about the latest addition to the clan.

The Pullman as mentioned above is a wonderful place with roaring fires in winter and a big garden in summer. It’s run by local power couple Ben and Lucy and their wonderful team, it’s just got that hearty community vibe that makes it feel like all of Folkestone is there.

Others well worth seeking out include The Smokehouse, Blooms at the 1/4, El Cortador, Earls, Big Boys Fine Burger Co, Lubens, The Pullman, Anna’s café and Steep Street coffee house. And don’t forget all the great food and drink offerings on the Harbour Arm.

Going posh: try Rocksalt for food, or the lighthouse champagne bar at the end of the harbour arm. Little Rock on the beach is fantastic in the summer.
