We then squeezed in a walk along Loch Linnhe, before heading to the Grog and Gruel for a bite to eat. Our last day in Fort William coincided with the World Cup Final, so naturally we piled into the nearest pub and spent the afternoon cheering on les grenouilles. No under-18s were allowed inside, but at one point a child ended up stood in front of me, his mum having nudged him in front of us so he’d have a good view of the screen, while she remained in the doorway.

The Crofter Bar is popular for live sport events and has a large bar area. In the centre of the High Street The Volunteer, is one of Fort William's oldest pubs, and named after recruits "volunteered" for active service in Scottish regiments in opposite Cameron Square.

We didn’t have a good time on our visit between grumpy service, farting dogs and pass-agg encounters with Canadian tourists determined to nab our space. But it’s certainly a nice looking, pubby pub, and we can imagine having fun there under different circumstances.

The Grog and Gruel is an OK pub on the high street, does ale and pub food. It’s a few miles from town to the ski centre which is where the DH track finishes and XC trail centre stuff starts. If you google the nevis ski centre you’ll see it’s not far from town.

Overlooked by Ben Nevis, this traditional alehouse and restaurant has been a staple in Fort William for almost 30 years. The food is hearty, the drinks local, and you can always guarantee a warm welcome from friendly staff.

There are clusters of inns and restaurants on the road between Fort William and Glencoe Mountain, including at the tiny town of Glencoe a bit further along from the ski area.

This pub / restaurant is a definite favorite with travelers. But it’s also popular with locals. I didn’t eat at this pub, but the food looked like some decent pub grub.

Drinking then shifts to the left side to find the Grog and Gruel and almost next door is The Tavern. Back to the right and there is soon The Ben Nevis.
