Once but a bare, unmarked slope of burnt grass at the rear of the pub casually used by drinkers spilling out of the conservatory on hot days, Belgian-themed bar Brel on Ashton Lane has put a lot of work into claiming and upgrading their beer garden in recent years. There are now lots of permanent tables and benches, and a substantial covered area for outdoor drinking and dining even when the weather turns. Sadly, I’m deathly allergic to shellfish so I couldn’t have the best dish at Brel, which is their Moules Frites (aka mussels and fries). Everyone I’ve ever known who has been to Brel has recommended the Moules Frites to me and I’m like, “Sounds good, but I don’t want to die.” So, if you’re not cursed with a shellfish allergy like I am, definitely get these. If you show up before 6 PM, they’re only 6 quid!

Serving up some of Belgium's finest exports (hint: it's beer), this bar is aptly named after a Belgian singer (Jacques Brel).
