And with rafts of pubs from the quirky and haunted to the trendiest of bars serving good food, it is now safe to say, York has it all, and for that, we have to thank the independent operators who took a risk with York; one which thankfully seems to have paid off.

Probably one of the most elegant venues for brunch in Harrogate, The Ivy on Parliament Street offers all-day dining in a sophisticated setting. Boasting high ceilings, Art Deco features and some exceptional antique ornamental pieces, the dining room provides a luxurious setting for a delicious brunch. Don’t let the ornate decor fool you into presuming that dining at The Ivy will be a pretentious affair; brunch here is informal and laidback despite the astonishingly Instagrammable setting.

Instead, we headed to York’s ‘The Ivy’ – one of a chain of art deco luxury restaurant-bars throughout the UK – who offer a good range of tasty afternoon tea options too. I settled with a peach cocktail, while Alex went for a cream tea and my sister went for their espresso chocolate cake. Obviously I had a taste and OH MY … it may just be the best slice of chocolate cake I’ve had in my life!

2021 Review: A “bustling” ambiance that “gives a lift to the spirits” is the chief plus-point of this brasserie offshoot of the ever-expanding London luminary. Even fans concede it’s “expensive for what it is”, and “could be said to be a little formulaic”, while a couple of other reporters noted meals that were positively bad.

The Ivy‘s brunch menu is only available on weekends and bank holidays (11am-4pm) but they do have a breakfast menu that runs Mon-Fri till 11:30am and Sat-Sun till 11am. If you don’t mind eating a little earlier I think the breakfast menu sounds the nicest.

The Ivy Harrogate do a Saturday and Sunday Brunch (and bank holidays). The restaurant itself is a beautiful art deco inspired space. With options like Truffle Arancini, Zucchini fritti, Eggs Benedict and Avocado Benedict, as well as Hot Buttermilk Pancakes for those (like me) with a sweet tooth!

Price: From £8.95 per person for a cream tea and £26.95 for afternoon tea. One of my favourite cocktail bars in Harrogate, The Ivy is a luxury chain with all the heart and soul of a small boutique. Afternoon teas at The Ivy have gained a reputation for being delicious – and for good reason!
