What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Farmyard is praised for its delicious, locally sourced food with unique flavor combinations and an extensive natural wine list. Diners appreciate the cozy, rustic atmosphere and attentive staff. However, some reviews mention inconsistencies in service, with occasional instances of rudeness or a perceived drop in attentiveness, and one review noted an overcharge.
"Wonderful flavours and locally sourced ingredients.
Great service and a cosy environment.
Recommended."

"Really great place for dinner, with the food so tasty we tucked in before taking any photos. But from the bread to start, through to dessert was a treat for the tastebuds.
We had a large plate, two small plates and a side to share between two of us and each was TV. fantastic. Even just a bowl of cabbage was so wonderfully done.
The staff are super lovely and given it was my friends birthday they were wonderful in treating us.
Booking in advance for busy times is required, which shows just how great this place is. Highly recommended"
Elizabeth Smith
"Really nice place, with good ambience and service. We had the homemade bread and garlic, fish and two other small dishes and you could really taste all the flavours (oil, capers, sauces). The merengue dessert was really nice too. Recommended!"

Best restaurants in Hastings and St Leonards, UK 2025
There’s sustainability on the menu at this convivial restaurant, wine bar and wine shop set among the cafes, restaurants and boutique shops of Kings Road. Dishes are centred around local and seasonal produce such as Hastings hot smoked salmon with apple, celery and walnut salad with a blue cheese dressing, while the wine list features natural, biodynamic and low-intervention wines. Sister restaurant Boatyard (boatyardstleonards.com) located in the nearby indoor food and drink Heist Market specialises in locally landed seafood including barbecued gurnard served with curry sauce.
What to Eat, Drink & Do in Hastings & St Leonards
So for your own safety, make for Farmyard: a gorgeously rustic spot with bare brick walls, candles stuffed into old bottles, and a library of organic & biodynamic wines designed to be savoured over a small banquet. The menu here is made with ingredients grown and reared nearby in Sussex and Kent, with sustainability at its heart. So you should almost certainly adopt a zero-waste mindset when tucking into plates like salt marsh lamb shoulder with anchovy crumb and feta; raclette on toast with french mustard; and salt-baked celeriac with Cashel Blue and hazelnuts.
A Food Guide to St Leonards
Also on the Kings Road, Farmyard is a popular restaurant and wine shop specialising in natural wines. Sustainability is key, not only in supporting small wine producers and organic farms but also evident in their eco energy and tap water only policies. The restaurant runs from small plates to hearty group chef’s menus, where a selection of pre-arranged sharing platters are brought to the table in waves and can be pre-ordered for groups of 9-15 people.
At Heist, the food market in St Leonards, there are so many mouth-watering options to try
We spent about 18 months coming down, putting offers in on various things that didn’t work out, until we found a place at the top of Kings Road, where we opened our first restaurant Farmyard. There wasn’t nearly as much going on in St Leonards as there is now, but it had a good vibe and we were busy. At the beginning it was just the two of us, Ben was in the kitchen and I was in front of house.

This restaurant and wine bar was opened in 2019 by former Evening Standard food writer Ben and his wife Kate. Sustainability is at the heart of what they do, so expect a very locavore menu with lesser-used cuts of meat. The wine list specialises in natural, biodynamic and low-intervention wines.
